Why have locking single-blade folders replace stockman/barlow/pen style knives?

OK I am late to this discussion, I got 5 pages in and was yet to see anyone challenge the statement that modern knives have replaced older traditional styles. Forgive me if I missed anything.
But I guarantee that Victorinox and Opinel sell WAY MORE knives every year than all of BM, Spyderco, Kershaw etc. combined.
Our community on BFs is a tiny part of the knife carrying public.
I know lots of folks who edc knives and none of them ever visit our forum. Many of them EDC SAKs.

Traditional knives still outsell anything tactical.

Actually, I read several years ago that Victorinox produces 35 million knives per year, and more recently I saw production figures for Opinel at 7 million knives per year. That's a lot of knives no matter how ya cut it.

It sure is. :)

A lot of folks who carry a locking knife to use for work, woods and whatever also own a Victorinox of some sort.
Seems that many of them use the one-hand opening knife more often though, as it is convenient to do so.

I carry a Swisschamp, and those tools come in really handy at times.
But when it's time to cut things with a knife blade, I reach for the one blade, one-hand opening knife clipped in my pocket.

When my brother spent a year in England, a Swiss Army Knife was his only knife there, and he used it for many tasks, including camping (the saw came in handy).
Once he was back in Canada though, the ZT 0551 went back in his pocket, and sees lots of use at work.

The thing about saks and opinels is a lot of them end up in junk drawers, tool boxes etc and are rarely if ever used.

I feel that way sometimes about Saks. But Alox Saks I love! The cadet is in my regular rotation! I recently got a job at a pretty large financial institution, and I feel more comfortable with the Alox than anything else.

I had an alox farmer and traded it for a leek. Ended up giving the leek away. Should have kept the farmer.

I sure see a lot of SAKs on folk's key-chains. Even non-knife-people seem to have them on their keychains and use the little sissors.

Yes, a lot do end up never getting much use due to pure volume sold. A lot do get used.
A whole lot of people are never going to spend more than $50 ever on a knife. Just think of the amount of people who don't ever sharpen, nor have a knife sharpener.
