Why I don't like thumb holes

It's not really a question of need, unless your an EMS or on Deadliest Catch or something like that. Most of us could get buy with just carrying a slipjoint (and indeed many of us do), but some people, myself included, like to hae their knives open as quikly as possible- that's people sell assisted openers.
Personally, the highest evolution of one-handed opening is the Carson Flipper tab.

In my experience, opening speed really comes down to the shape of the folder, assuming it opens as smoothly as your average knife. The "flicking" aspect might be a preference, but flickability really has no impact on overall opening speed. If you're really interested in opening a knife asap, why haven't you considered something with a wave feature? BTW, Autos are really no faster than your average BM axis lock or even Spyderco for that matter.

In considering opening a knife quickly, being able to grab the knife out of the pocket or where ever else you may keep it, getting the knife and your hand into an "opening ready" position and then actually opening it needs to be considered. It's not just about opening it from the point of your hand being in the "opening" position. One of the reasons Spyderco knives can be opened so quickly is because a lot them have excellent ergos for that. So I'm really having a difficult times believing that opening speed is really the main concern. I think the main concern is your wanting to be able to flick a blade open. I think you get a satisfaction from that and the perception of speed that it gives.

Like I said, I have, but it would most likely scare the people I hang out with (high schoolers). (no, even I'm not stupid enough to carry a knife to school)
None of them have ever questioned my knife carrying, because it's been obvious due to what I'll be doing (opening something, etc) but I still think that pulling a knife out of my pocket and having it self open would probably scare, or at least upset them.
(NB, for ultimate sheeple moments, I use a SAK Classic or the sciccors on my Swisscard)

The FASTEST one hand openers are sheath knives.
Hole works best for me when the hands are slippery/wet.
If you can open it in LESS than a second, it's quick enough for a folding knife, and the hole opening is much quicker than that.

FWIW---My latest folder will be a pinch-blade. That'll be my first one. Thanks.

How did the world ever cope when all there was were slipjoint folders...
They seemed to do fairly well, especially considering they used their knives (folding or otherwise) FAR more often and in rougher conditions than the average owner in an industrialized country ;).

SENO---I just ordered a Eye Brand big Boy Sodbuster, for reasons you mentioned!! Thanks.

I knew I've done it before so I just tried my Police and no problem flicking it open with my thumb only. I didn't have to flip my wrist to get the blade to open completely. My Military is a liner lock and opened more smoothly without the pressure of a backspring. But the same thing there, no additional movement of the wrist was needed other than the flick of my thumb to deploy the blade. My Delica on other hand took several tries and extreme force and lip biting to get the blade all the way open without flicking my wrist. The old school Remote Release opend as easily as the Police without the extra weight of a large blade. In my opinion some Spyderco models are easier to open than others with a simple flick of the thumb, but it can be done.

you may want to loosen/oil the pivot screw, I have never have a Spyder which I can't flick open with just the thumb when adjusted properly

Thanks LowTEC.

Honestly I may have exaggerated a little, I got it on the third try. I just didn't want these guys to feel bad about not being able to open their Spydies with their little finger. No pivot screw on this salty well used little Delica circa '99 she is an all stainless puppy. A drop of CLP wouldn't hurt though.
