It's not really a question of need, unless your an EMS or on Deadliest Catch or something like that. Most of us could get buy with just carrying a slipjoint (and indeed many of us do), but some people, myself included, like to hae their knives open as quikly as possible- that's people sell assisted openers.
Personally, the highest evolution of one-handed opening is the Carson Flipper tab.
In my experience, opening speed really comes down to the shape of the folder, assuming it opens as smoothly as your average knife. The "flicking" aspect might be a preference, but flickability really has no impact on overall opening speed. If you're really interested in opening a knife asap, why haven't you considered something with a wave feature? BTW, Autos are really no faster than your average BM axis lock or even Spyderco for that matter.
In considering opening a knife quickly, being able to grab the knife out of the pocket or where ever else you may keep it, getting the knife and your hand into an "opening ready" position and then actually opening it needs to be considered. It's not just about opening it from the point of your hand being in the "opening" position. One of the reasons Spyderco knives can be opened so quickly is because a lot them have excellent ergos for that. So I'm really having a difficult times believing that opening speed is really the main concern. I think the main concern is your wanting to be able to flick a blade open. I think you get a satisfaction from that and the perception of speed that it gives.
