Why is my brain suddenly consumed by the urge to buy knives?

As for the OP and breaking the $200 barrier: try this on for size. How's about $1299 for a really sick folder! This be my grail knife, cause I effin want one, but will never, ever pay this kind of dough for a knife. I love the thing though, just freakin awesome.

Mods: this ain't deal spotting. Not many folks would pay $1299 for a folder. Wish I could though. Have to see what I can sell to come up with the cash. Left arm. or right? ;-)

Wow that's a biggy. Larger blade than my fixed blades :o

I know. I like big folders. It's not quite up to the Cold Steel Espada XL, but I love the look. Huge spear point blade and all that gorgeous titanium. I am afraid if I did spring for it, I'd be afraid to use the bloody thing. And probably the only blood it would ever see is mine. :-0

Oh-oh, It sounds like you have managed to turn on a lattent collector interest. You are now doomed and it is not even about knives. It is really about the joy of the hunt for that next interesting items that fit your collection; if you decide to stop collecting knives you will probably start collecting stereos, camera, flashlights, guns, pound puppies, cars or some other silly thing. You may as well kick back and enjoy the many interesting people whom you will meet along the way.

I'm new here as well. I'm on a knife buying binge as well.

It had been a while (like a year) since I'd purchased a new knife. My gun fetish was draining my bank account, so I had to take a break from buying guns or knives. However, for some reason in the last three weeks I bought four new knives. SOG Pentagon Elite 1, a KA-BAR, Cold Steel Recon 1, and last night, a Kershaw Blur with desert tan handle and black blade. I almost bought a ZT 350TS, but decided to wait and save up for a 300.

Why did I start buying knives like a mad man all of a sudden. Not sure. I guess maybe because the knives I had were getting old and beat up. I used to be a SOG fanboy, not so much anymore except for their higher end stuff. I used to have a Pentagon Elite when I was in high school (20 years ago) that was pre-arc lock. Loved the knife but I lost it. So, I decided to get a new one. Love it. Then, I was at a gun shop buying ammo, looking at guns, when I saw a KA-BAR and had to have it. It was mismarked for only $50 so what the hell. THEN, last weekend I fondled a friends CS Recon 1. Had to have one. Heard a lot of good things about the Kershaw blur, handled one and bought it.

I don't know when and where this will stop, but like Jankey, I'm obsessed. I have not taken it so far as to drive extreme distances to find my next knife, 20 miles the farthest I've driven. Blade steels, heat treatment etc fascinate me, and I am saving up for some of the higher end steels. My first experience with a somewhat high end steel was a sog mini xray vision that had ats-34 and boy it has taken a pounding and never gives up.

I use my knives camping a lot, and also at my office cutting random stuff just for the hell of it. I have a desk job, but occasionally I open boxes. Mail, no.

My obsession is getting the better of me, and I may need professional (or non) to stop. If the trend continues, I will soon be broke.

JJ- I see nothing wrong with what you are now experiencing - Normal blade enthusiast's daily routine. Embrace it!

Thanks for the welcomes. I do tend to type as I would talk. I edited my post. Think I got all the dirtywords out.
About that Argonaut- seems a bit gigantic for a pocket knife.

I come from an art/sculpture background, so I definitely see knife making in my future. I'm already setting up to try my hand at making some crazy micarta handles for all these machetes I've got laying around.

I would like to think of my knives as tools. HA! Your should see my tool boxes. There is a lot more of them than I need to. The mere satisfaction of having has got many in trouble. Self included. My wallet and psyche feel your burden. And like some other relationships, if they kiss you. You bleed.

Great thread and post by the OP.

As humanoids we've been using a cutting tool for 3.4 million years (Tool Use by Early Humans Started Much Earlier)! So, you could say it's in our DNA.

Back in 2005 Forbes conducted a survey of the Top 20 Most Important Tools of All Time and the knife came out on top. Additionally, of the top 20 tools 5 more are a related tool: chisel, lathe, saw, scythe and sword.

Great post! Thanks for sharing

Let's see...bought my first pocket knife in April and I'm up to 11 (either in hand or in mail). Whoops.

Skipped one of my weekly gas top offs this week because I really wanted a Scallion (my Chive was so lonely) and I decided that I needed a couple of fixed blades because why just stick with folders?

I should slow down, but this is fun and I've snagged good deals on most of the blades.

Dear, JankeyJenkum. Your first post has more or less described my current situation.

Sometimes, late at night, I lay awake, fantasizing about what blades I might check out on ebay tomorrow, and I try to rationalize why I need an other serrated folder. Who knows? I might end up in a car accident, and I might desperately need to cut a seat belt, just to stay alive. Therefore I should, as a responsible husband, and concerned citizen, have a knife in every single jacket, bag, briefcase and car I own. Anything else would be too little.

The strange thing is that 6 months ago, I owned one dull fixed blade, that was stacked in a backpack, deep down in the basement. Like a latent disease the knife fetishism crept into my consciousness, I cant even remember the exact situation, or what awakened my fascination. But one day I was watching hours upon hours of youtube vids, taking notes of all the reviews, and writing down the top models of each brand. Comparing, and spending entire evenings on just staring at knives on ebay.

These days I spend more time thinking about knives, comparing knives, reading reviews, than I do using any of them. Though, every single time I sit down, I feel my pocket for the folder I wear, pick it up, unfold it, wave it around a bit, fold it up, unfold it, fold it, and I stick in into my pocket again. That's the most hardcore use any folder usually gets during a day.

My wife thinks I'm crazy, and none of my friends really understands. I don't think I even understand this strange, and for some people scary phenomenon that has struck me.

Does socially irresponsible include shipping knives to work and "muleing" them back in the house? My only advice regarding is either don't get married or chose a knife with a strong detent.

Hi JJ,

Welcome to THE MADNESS! Thankfully, I have SOME self control when it comes to buying knives. This may be in part due to my changing economic situation (getting poorer every day). Once upon a time, I collect Vintage (mostly) Tube Audio gear, Horn Speakers, etc. until my home looked like a Warehouse! I've since sold off a lot of gear and I still have TOO much. I too also like Firearms, Flashlights, Axes/Hatchets, Machetes/etc. At this stage in my life, I am THANKFUL for "things" I own as today, I can no longer afford to buy expensives toys. Heck, I was recently checking out "todays" prices on several items I bought years ago and was SHOCKED at their cost! For instance, my Swiss Army Knife "SWISS CHAMP" today sells for upwards of one hundred dollars! Whoa! There is NO way I can justified spending this kind of money (on a regular basis) for a new knife. My last (too me) expensive knife purchase was almost two years ago for a (difficult to find) Spyderco Para Military 2 folder. I must confess however, this year, I am having a Custom made Tomahawk being made for me by Blacksmith Mr. Jeff Miller. Of late, I have been doing some "Horse Trading" of certain items in order to obtain other "toys". JJ, I am HIGHLY going to suggest that you consider (doing as I'm doing) and learn to take pleasure buying excellent quality low cost knives (the kind you won't be afraid to use) such as Swiss Army Knives, Mora and (one I've yet to purchase but hear great things) Opinel. In addition, I have been going CRAZY seeking/buying IN-expensive Knives, Axes/Hatchets etc. from the likes of "Flea Markets, Garage/Yard Sales, Junk and Thrift Shops, etc.
Presently, I have been buying old (mostly Rusty) Carbon Steel Butcher type knives. I just can't find/buy enough of these old Butcher type knives! I LOVE em! Best of luck to you JJ. Oooh yea, I almost forgot.....for some strange reason, I've also started collecting OLD Bone and/or Antler handle Carving knives. I don't know why but, there is just "something" about the blade shape of these vintage knives that I really like. I also have been collecting old Bone, Wood and/or Antler handle "flat ware". I especially like the old (three prong) Forks with Wood-Pinned and Pewter inlay Forks. I also like the old Butter Knives as well. Most of these items can be found "on the cheap" and I think they are cool!

Regards,
HARDBALL
