Why is my brain suddenly consumed by the urge to buy knives?

Just wait until you get into 1000$+ customs. There is no turning back. I thought it was crazy to spend that much on anything frivolous. Now I'm buying one 1000 $ custom a month.

I'm already fawning over them. Subscribing to Jim Skeltons youtube channel has already got me well informed on, and lusting after $800-1200 knives. Oh great, a professional pitch man doing 15 minute HD videos about thousand dollar knives- this is exactly what i need right now...

I think it goes without saying that you are in the right place. I feel we all have a little sickness for a piece of HQ steel:D Sounds like you like kershaws??? Just wondering if you have tried a ZT? you can get a 0550 or 0560 for around that 200 mark your asking for if you look around. check the exchange out ect.View attachment 372815

Yes. Kershaw's are definitely what got this party started for me. And yes, ZT is the next step. Main issue for me is that the one's I've seen are just too "regular" looking. In my opinion, for that kind of cash, it should have a bit more style...

And here you've gone and shown me these two...wow.

Nice job. I say post pics of a knife that would make me want to cross the $200 threshold...and the first person to do so, nails it on the first try. Well done. I would definitely drop over 2 bills for either of those right now. Please tell me they aren't some kind of super rare custom job. What is the purple blade even called? I google "purple zt 0550 & 0560" and only get handle scales. How can I learn more about these two knives? Like, maybe a search term or something so I can keep them on my radar.

I could be wrong, I suppose, but it looks like a regular knife. I think the pic was taken under artificial light with the white balance cranked off a bit on the camera. Never seen purple knife blade, though I suppose you could make one. I know you can can heat blue (or get a straw color or other colors), though the process tends to destroy the temper of the steel.

Also, heat coloring stainless steel (and the El Max blades are a kind of stainless steel) is non-trivial. Check out Giusseppe Lund (http://www.metalgarden.ca).

Bwahhaa!.....I just joined this forum after having found answers here for research on blades I was considering many times over the last six months. Ironic that the first post I read after officially joining is this one.
Fine I'll get the cheaper one.
(you know I wont).

Dirty knife stories? Well, I've got my wedding coming up in a little over a year, haven't saved a dime towards it, and instead have spent almost $1000 on a total of 3 knives within a couple months. And that's going slow. And I'm only going slow because the soon to be wife is on to me. I blame the forum. If it wasn't for them, I never would've found out about Busse knives, or the various flavors of the Para 2, or all the crazy steels I need to try out. She's already told me that I'm not allowed to buy any more knives until after the wedding. Twice. I'm in deep, lol.

Edit: it should be noted that I was the same way for a while. I thought $60 for a knife was ridiculous. Now I think nothing of spending $250 on a good blade. Still haven't quite worked my way up to Chris Reeves or Hinderers yet though. That's probably for the best.

First folder I bought that was close to USD 300, the fit was perfect, the finish was almost perfect with small nicks on the G10 and titanium liner, the other USD 250+ folder I have is the ZT561, also has a small but deep machine mark on the Blade, just my luck with more expensive folders. Sticking with sub USD 250 from now on, since the rest of my folders are perfect fit and finish including two other ZTs I have, except my Emerson which was meant to be a little crude anyway.

But CRK, Striders, Hinderer..... I will get those some day, better change my personal rule to below 250 or above 400.

Buddy, I'm in the same boat.

On a related note, we were moving out of state and the movers needed me to write down how much I thought my knife collection was worth for insurance reasons. My fiance was right next to me and I told them, "about $2000". I lied. It's probably double that.

Like guns, movers don't move any of my high value or concentrated value items that are easily stolen. You shouldn't even been talking to the movers.

yeah sorry took that on my phone the 0561 has anodized green TI and a glow in the dark scale though.

haha! I don't know if it counts since, at least from reading your website, it seems to have worked out for you.

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock'n'roll ;)

I see you've got 11,000 + posts, and I will probably be reading most of them in the near future.

Don't get too excited, at least half of them are just me goofing off in the Community areas. :D Take some time and read through the stickies in ShopTalk; there is a ton of information there.

* Also, I really dig the Growl

Thank you! That model is doing pretty well. :)

Welcome to the addiction :D

I've resorted to buying 15-28 dollar Moras in between birthdays and Christmas to keep myself under control. Now I have a local knife store that is awesome and I can't let myself go there very often! I still can't afford to drop the kind of cash some people on here talk about, but I always love reading about it and just looking around this awesome forum. Sometimes, just seeing the different steels and designs along with the vast amount of knowledge on here keeps things at bay!

I know what you mean...$100-150 used to be a nice knife, then it crept up to $250, then it was a Sebenza, then more Sebenzas.

A bit of advice: If you ever plunk down the $1,000 or so for a Shirogorov, go ahead and set aside another few hundred for therapy - because I can guarantee you one won't be enough, and you'll really want to know why. :o

I too am addicted to knives. I've been seriously into them for about 5 years now. I've owned anywhere from $10 knives to $500 knives. Currently the most expensive knife I have is worth roughly $175. I'm currently on the road to get more expensive knives again. Every once in a while I start over from square one and trade/buy/sell my way back up. This just makes me love and appreciate every knife that passes through my hands even more. =]

But right now I'm currently waiting on two packages, hopefully they'll be here tomorrow. Both have sharp tools in them lol.

I've been getting back into trading more and I am trying to complete a nice EDC setup.

I'm now stuck on pens, flashlights, multi-tools, pocket tools, and other things lol. So word to the wise... never ever decide you need more EDC gear than just a knife... because that habit gets stupid expensive too. I currently have 8 knives(soon to be 9, 10 if you count my little SAK classic on my keys), a multi-tool(on its way), 2 flashlights, 3 pens, and a little pocket prybar in titanium. And I still want.. feel like I need.. but really it's just a huge want.. more.

This is an awesome hobby though and I enjoy every minute of it. Seems like you do too, so keep it up!! You'll find the right folder for you, although your leek seems to handle what you need it to. You definitely don't need serrations to cut rope, I find plain edges go through rope more smoothly anyways.

Welcome to Blade Forums, and your new never ending addiction!

Mostly older Buck's, some traditional's, Kershaw's, Spyderco's, then found this forum and shi-...
In the last month picked up a Spydy Military and a ZT 801.
Oh, and a renewed interest in getting a blade very sharp

I too have been consumed. It started with me buying a Spyderco Southard for a great price 3 month ago. Since then I have purchased 7 knives and I am about to pull the trigger on a Sebenza. I need help....

Please, don't get me started.

I have a box full of knives that I've never used for more than cutting paper, and that box is probably worth over $4000NZ. My user of choice is a Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite, or a Tom Krein Pocket Bowie. I really don't have any use for any larger knives, although I usually take my Cold Steel Eland to picnics and barbecues in case someone needs a knife.

Let's call it what it is, it's a hobby, it can be an expensive hobby, and like most hobbies it's quite unnecessary but we do it anyway.

As long as the mortgage gets paid and there's food on the table, don't worry about it.
