Why is S35VN your favorite steel?

I think I like it because the mass market knives get the heat treatment right consistently, and is good for a general purpose knife.

It seems to hold an edge well on a slicey blade, but be tough enough for general use.

Did you add a Lil something to get that free shipping? I did haha
No i screwed up. I told my brother about it and he ordered both the size snodys too and told me about it after I had already placed mt order! Totally missed that. doh!
If I had seen that I woulda added something small....like the snody Snake Charmer 😄

It's been my experience that like many steels; heat treatment can vary a whole lot. The WE and Kizer I had was run soft. The TSF Beast too hard, it tended to chip. My Soutgern Grind Spider Monkey was pretty good. I own none of those knives now.

The best example of S35VN I've experienced is with my two Heretics. Ive used the crap out of my Manticore E.

Sharpmaker = ceramic rods right?
Ceramic, cbn, and diamond rods are available for the Sharpmaker. I have the ultra fine, fine, medium, and cbn rods and they all work great for me.

I only have one knife left in s35vn, ESEE Izula, and have no issues using the Sharpmaker to maintain it. It also does fine with Buck & Benchmade s30v knives I own, which seem a bit more finicky that s35vn. I’ve sharpened 3v with it as well without issue. I don’t own any of the super hard edge retention steels so I can’t speak on those.

And are these ceramic or diamond? I just bought my first S35VN blade and I'm wondering if it will sharpen on the ceramic rods I've stashed everywhere. Obviously I can just test and find out... but this thing hasn't gotten dull yet. :)

I’ve found that CRK drop point blades in S30V, and S35/45VN take excellently to the Spyderco sharpmaker - been using it exclusively for over a decade, and you can even be lazy and pull the tip right off the stone without rounding it. This isn’t the case with most blades, it’s a nice little bonus with the CRK stuff.

Joe X recently stress tested a Cold Steel 5 max with S35VN. It preformed terribly. I'd rather have 8cr13mov on my Espada xl than S35VN. If I were to hit metal with it I fear the whole blade would break.

Joe X’s tests are uncontrolled and therefore meaningless entertainment. “Performed terribly” is not a comment one can make regarding a Joe X destruction video.

Let's try not to let this thread run off the rails or posts will be removed, and / or thread closed. Thank you.

S35vn and Magnacut are my two favorites, both take a very keen edge very quickly and easily. Both have performed excellent with no problems at all even in hard use out in the rough. I expect they will outlast me.
