Why is the ESEE 5 not as popular as...

the BK2? Not in general- this is not a BK2 vs. ESEE 5 post. What I mean is, if you visit the Becker subforum, the BK2 is often referred to as the favorite for a large proportion of posters. But in the ESEE subforum, the 5 receives no such love. It is the favorite for a few in any query, but nowhere near a large proportion, much less a majority of respondents. These two knives are not exactly the same, I understand that. But, close enough in each companies lineups. Both are the same length, 1/4" thickness, and the BK2 is even heavier. So, why is the ESEE 5 not your favorite?

It's my favorite. I compare it more to a BRKT Bravo 1 which is a great blade also. I think some folks don't like to EDC larger blades, whereas I do. Sure, I keep a little folder in my pocket at all times, but it's nice to know the larger fixed is there and ready. I suppose if you're a city folk you may not have as much use for it unless the SHTF, but anyone who spends any time in the outdoors should love this blade. Also, some folks like a rotation of their favority EDC blades, or hiking blades, etc. and never have one single favorite, which is ok too. For what's it worth, I love mine and when some start getting offered with custom slabs like the ESEE-4, I'll own another! :)

Probably because Ethan Becker is so awesome of an indvidual and makes better knife than we do :)

Hey now. :p
I don't know of Ethan Becker's company but I think the people behind ESEE are awesome. +1 for ESEE

I just googled "BK2" and their knife is ugly compared to ESEE-5. No offense to Ethan Becker. :D

Ha. In all fairness, you also mentioned that Jerry Busse's knives and steel is better than yours. :p

Well, what can I say, I'm an honest man. Now, I feel if we could manage to write a cookbook and drink more scotch then our knives might get better!

I'm tellin' him you said that and I took a snapshot of the page so E can have it blown up and made into a poster.:D

He is pretty awesome though.

Its just a difference of personal preference. The ESEE4 (I own one) is helluva middle of the road knife capable of alot of things. When the Kabar/Becker tweeners come out, I would say there will be alot folks that will change their mind. I'm not one of them, my BK2 is my "The Knife" and I will never part with it. Its with me everytime I step off the pavement.

ESEE had a very good line up that covers all bases of knife size and function and are one helluva good knife, and backed up by Jeff and Mike's warranty.

Oh shit, he will have that blown up to greyhound bus size and it will be plastered all over the walls at SHOT show....and Ethan will be casually walking by our booth with that shit eatin' grin on his face and never say a word. He's an evil man.

I don't own a BK-2, but I sharpened a few for folks. It is very much like the ESEE-5. I prefer the handle on the ESEE. I think the reason the ESEE-5 may not be as popular among ESEE knife owners is the ESEE-6. Maybe a cookbook featuring ESEE Haggis would help.

Yeah, but we never wrote a cookbook!

You know, most folks that own Becker knives don't know Ethan wrote "The Joy of Cooking". We get posts that are like, "My GF got a cookbook this year and Ethan's name was on it, and I opened the cover and there he was. When did he write a cookbook? Last year?"

Just like, I bet most ESEE owners don't know how much Jeff likes killing shit with his hat. Bugs, wasps, fly, stuff like that, he LOVES it, if you ever meet him, he's got little tic marks inside the brim to keep count of each victim.

:D

That's actually a very true statement! Anyone raised on a farm wears a hat and it's not just to keep the sun off your head.

Nothing wrong with BK's , nothing wrong with the ESEE5 to me the BK2 & ESEE 5 suffer from the same thing blade length; 1/4" thick(there about) and short blade, just does not mix well as a daily user for me ,now I do carry a ESEE5 in my Truck bag...
I got my son the BK2 last year ,he loved it but the again he carries the ESEE3 in his campout bag

Bahhh...fence sitters!

I think we need to initiate an all-out pissing contest with the Beckerheads. To hell with all this being nice stuff. We need a good fight with Becker and all his cronies. We know we're prettier than they are!

I don't generally have one favorite, but rather favorites for different roles. The 5 is my favorite truck/GHB/BOB/SHTF/ZombieApocalypse knife and I keep it in my truck WMD bag. I'll break it out for camping and hunting sometimes, but it most often lives in my truck. If I had to, though, I could easily classify each ESEE I have as a favorite for something.
