Why no basic sheath?

Just an FYI:
More than once, when a service member posted a need here, it's been taken care of VERY quickly. If not by Busse then by the members here. Busse's went with me on both my "trips" to the big sandy as they are the only ones I trust my life to. I knew where I was going in plenty of time to get a knife and sheath.
BTW, thank you for your service
Bob

I bought 2 Spec Ops 6" sheaths on ebay for 2 Tank Busters (my first Busse's). They make an 8" also. Have one to store a custom number I have.

It's because;

Guy/Gal #1 wants Gal/Guy #2 wants
leather kydex
weak side carry strong side carry
vertical 15 drgree cant
belt loop tek-lok
brown orange with pink dots

and on and on and on.

And it would be an extra, needless cost to those that want a different sheath than the "standard".

Try as Busse does, they just couldn't please everybody.

As I said, always reasons not to do something. It would still be nice to have something inexpensive to be available to those who want them. That wouldn't add cost to those who don't.

Well despite my ability to argue this to death, it is what it is. I manage to make due one way or the other. As another poster stated though, the military folks only need to post and somehow we can get them hooked up. Great community that we have here.

leaky Waders: Thank you so much for your service to our country to protect our freedoms! 2+ years of deployment away from your family is quite a sacrifice. I know that we all are humbled by, and appreciate, it. Have a safe, peaceful and festive Christmas season with your loved ones.

Your shipment is at the mercy of the sheath maker if you're outsourcing. Knives are ready but sheaths aren't? The customer waits on his knife for a sheath. I can't speak to the volume of sales Busse has, but I'd imagine it's not quite big enough to warrant a major factory making quality sheaths compared to a large production company like spyderco or benchmade. That leaves you with smaller sheath manufacturers that we buy from now, and I doubt any one maker could keep up with the order volume. It doesn't seem logical to ship knives with with sheaths made from a variety of companies.

A company like JRE could deal with it, they can do sheaths for low volume makers.

I'd like to see Busse send out a trainer knife of sorts to the different sheath makers so they could have an offering ready when the knife is released.

I'm sure our sheath makers would love a program like that!

And therein may be precisely the reason Busse doesn't sell sheaths. Doing so would limit their builder's tolerances.

I had a similar experience with a RatManDu. I purchased a sheath and it rubbed on the blade horribly . . . enough to remove some of the coating, not just smooth it. I eventually had to send the sheath back. When I returned it, the sheathmaker tried it with his RatManDu and he said it held the blade snugly, but it didn't leave rub marks or smooth the coating. I know the sheathmaker well enough to know that he's telling me the truth. And, of course, the RMD's only had one blade thickness . . . 3/16".

That actually surprises me, the recent knives have been pretty consistent, I thought. There have been several iterations/generation of Active Duties, but only one run of RMD, AFAIK.

Clearly Busse could find a way to offer a sheath if Jerry chose to. He used to, but has changed that policy. Who knows, maybe it will change again.

We know that Busse sells a lot of knives to various service units, I bet that they go out with a sheath.

I rather have my knifemaker concentrate on knives than sheaths. No matter what he does people will whine and cry about why he doesn't do something else. His business model appears to be working fine.;)
BTW, in the old days when Jerry offered 4 models ONLY with NO options, it wasn't the chore it would be now and people still complained.
Special SMALL runs for the .mil folks would be fairly easy to get sheaths done for due to the small numbers involved.

I like that they dont come with sheaths because I am pretty picky. For example, I hate the sheath that my bravo1 came with but I dont feel like buying a custom for it since I spent the cash for the one it came with. Personal opinion of course :)

One option is better than no option. Just because one basic sheath may not fit everyone's needs, doesn't mean its reason to not offer it. Most every knife you buy comes with a sheath where you have no choice as to how its carried, and people have lived with it for years. Maybe the knife doesn't need to come with a sheath and have a price that reflects it, but I think its a very valid arguement to at least offer something on the site for each knife offered.

Come on... we get one or two new knives in batches of a couple hundred every few months. You can't tell me it would be that difficult to subcontract one of these kydex benders to provide a sheath for the few who would want them. The rest of us would continue our custom orders as usual.

I need to learn how to make sheaths or something. They are expensive. I will say that every sheath I've bought has been great and I understand why they cost what they do. I'm just cheap :p

Mashed cat seems to have sheaths ready made to buy for most knives. No fitting or sending in the knife as long as it is a common model.

Some Busse owners buy many of the same knife and don't need a sheath for every one. There are other good reasons.

I do, think that it would be a good idea to at least offer an optional sheath, so those buying one had the option.

Hi,

Thanks for the discussion. So, looking at the Busse website...I think I have a Boss HG55 Limited Edition Satin Finished Convex Grind Blade. It has #408 on it.

I guess I'll start looking for a sheath now before my next deployment.

Bob, you're right - you usually have a little lead time to plan before you leave. Of the past three since OIF/OEF, I've left in one week's notice on the first deployment. The other two I had a few months notice. Of the three, I never really knew where I would be until I got there.

I'll eventually get a sheath, but I may still take the randall afterall. It's lighter, and it's kind of 'lucky' I guess since both it and me have made several roundtrips thus far.

L.W.

P.S. - Thank you for all the kind words related to the deployments. Everyone sincerely appreciates those thoughts. And, the heroes and the families of those who have been wounded and fallen in action appreciate your continued prayers.

Nice Final Post LW and you make a good point.

I have a Basic 9...it is an early knife from Busse which came with a sheath and the sheath is ideal for Military use...and IMO civi use...the Basic's were cheap enough when first sold by Busse not to have anyone complain about the sheath if they wanted leather...and I have never heard of anyone complain about the Basic sheaths either...

I am sure some of the makers would have a HG55 sheath they could put out to you quickly....although there is nothing wrong with the Randall 1... especially if you feel it is "lucky"....

I try to avoid those thoughts though...I had a Khukri which meant a bit to me like that and it got knicked...if I had caught the person I would have gone too far...since then I have had to dump a fair bit of gear for different reasons...and now I don't get so attached.

I never did like the fact that BUSSE knifes don't include a sheath, but I've expressed my opinion before.

Hey Brother, welcome Home! I am in the Army! just want to give you my thoughts on the sheath deal, Yea at first I thought the same thing, a knife should come with a sheath. I changed my mind after getting a good sheath made for a Busse then another then another, Bottom line is a great knife deserves a great sheath.
