Why no basic sheath?

Good stuff everyone... Just curious though Leaky, what kind of sheath would you prefer? Leather or kydex?

I'm sure everyone could suggest any number of makers, but you mentioned an HG55. Savage Made Sheaths makes a nice leather one for it, and its shown on his site. He already has the knife. Oh yeah, and he makes em for for your silly Randalls too... ;)

I'm with the pro-sheath crowd. United Cutlery offers a very decent generic sheath that fits knives up to 7" blades or so, if they're not too thick. These go for $10 or less, and allow you to take your knife outdoors the moment you receive it. Often you don't need anything more, unless you want it real custom. I ordered several of these sheaths at once, and they're actually very good value for the money.

I understand it's much harder for a semi-custom maker like Busse to have their knives come with a sheath (like Cold Steel or Spyderco do), but an option for a cheap and decent generic one would be nice. I am not a collector, I use my knives, and cardboard just doesn't do it for me... ;) And while custom sheaths are great - and I own quite a few - they take time and substantial money to aquire. My Tankbuster, SuckEmbracer and Vex still need sheaths, and would have seen use a long time ago if they'd come with sheaths.
And isn't that what Saint Busse wants for his knives? :D

Hi,

Thanks for the discussion. So, looking at the Busse website...I think I have a Boss HG55 Limited Edition Satin Finished Convex Grind Blade. It has #408 on it.

I guess I'll start looking for a sheath now before my next deployment.

Bob, you're right - you usually have a little lead time to plan before you leave. Of the past three since OIF/OEF, I've left in one week's notice on the first deployment. The other two I had a few months notice. Of the three, I never really knew where I would be until I got there.

I'll eventually get a sheath, but I may still take the randall afterall. It's lighter, and it's kind of 'lucky' I guess since both it and me have made several roundtrips thus far.

L.W.

P.S. - Thank you for all the kind words related to the deployments. Everyone sincerely appreciates those thoughts. And, the heroes and the families of those who have been wounded and fallen in action appreciate your continued prayers.

Hey L.W.
What Branch are you serving in?

umm, hello, they come in Tactical Cardboard...

just wrap that sucker with some duct tape and you're good to go.

Gorilla tape is king.

Hi MC, I like the idea of having yours in the Company Store when the knives go up.....maybe that could extend to the Web Site....others too if fairness is an issue...

Nice answers all!

Hmmm, I don't like to tell too much about myself on anonymous boards but I'm in the Navy - of the three OIF deployments the 1st deployment was with the Marines, the second with a Navy Unit, and the 3rd with joint Spec Ops (no, I am not a SF).

The gorilla tape was my initial answer too!

The early Busse's used to come with a wonderful cordura Nylon Eagle Industries sheath with an incredibly tough liner. I've heard the reasons why Busse does not provide a sheath anymore, and they do make sense as far as increase in price, the owner getting what kind of sheath they want and getting knives out quicker.
Even with the explanations, that still does not allow you to put your new blade on your side "or LBE" when it comes in. There are quite a few times I've needed a blade to wear, and grabbed an SOG, Fehrman, or hell, a cold steel, because I can put it on my side quick. Its a decision that Busse has made and I'm sure it has not hurt their sales any; but I do feel for you not being able to take one on deployment due to no sheath. as a few above have mentioned, spec ops sheaths are great tactical sheaths and readily available on base or ordered; problem is they only fit a few busses without modification. I have modified many for my FSH, ASh1 NMSFNOs etc... but it takes about 30 minutes doing the Oven, lube, duct tape thing. and on two occasions I've screwed up sheaths by keeping the liner in the oven too long. Here are some of my better conversions. the Tank buster that was out, fit perfect in the 6" model if you got the swedged version

It's been mentioned, but I usually order a Mashed Cat sheath when I buy a new Busse, and to be honest, the sheaths usually get here before the knives do.

Order one with the drop loop and leg strap. You can then carry it on a belt, or take those off and run paracord through the holes to mount to anything MOLLE. Couls also do what I did and get a basic Mashed Cat for my FBM that stays mounted to my Kifaru Zulu, and get one with a leg strap and drop loop so I don't have to fart around with sheaths taking them on and off the pack, I just transfer the knife.

Randall is a classic blade that you cant go wrong with, they've been killing the enemy for over 60 years and still going strong. I know how you feel about your knife, I carried several blades during my combat time, I have a close attachment to them all. When my son gets his commission I'm giving him my Ek.

Hey Bro,
Not sure what you do in the Military, but if you are like me when you are outside the wire you are packed down like a mule and everything on your kit has its place. I have found that a custom Kydex or the Spec-Ops sheaths work best for me. I would rather get what I want or have it built for my needs instead of getting what the maker thinks is best for the overall buyer. I can tell you now that you will not get the kind of product, warranty or support from anyone else out there than that of BUSSE COMBAT not to mention the overall support and friendship you get from these guys on the Busse forum and that comes for free. I can attest to that.
HOOAH!;)

+1 And..... Any Busse you get will out perform and outlast any modern day Randall. Don't even get me started on Randall's! Yeah, they are purty to look at but use? Ok.. enough said.
