Why no BM model names

Just wondering why many posters only use Benchmades model number? If you are a BM fanatic that is fine but if not it is very prohibitive to understanding the discussion because one has to open a new window, go onto google/BM website ect; then return to the forum....
And it seems like BM is the only company here that gets this treatment. I do not care much for most BM designs and it is frustrating at times:(

Could be because benchmade has so many models.

Doesn't bother me really.

Makes more sense than calling spydercos silly pet names like caly, para, yoji, or whatever, and I see that all the time

I think it's because the majority of BM knives use model numbers and don't have an official name. There are exceptions like the Griptillian, Apparition, Stryker, etc.

When I think about it, most Benchmades do have names.

AFCK, TSEK, Griptillian, RUKUS, Nimravus, Infidel, Activator, etc. Of course, most of these are relatively recent.

McHenry & Williams knives seem to be the major exception. Numbers mostly (if not all).

People just seem to remember the model numbers more for some reason.

I think it's much easier to associate names than numbers. Benchmade uses 3 or more numbers with a lot of room in between models, so it's slightly easier to remember than say the Becker line.

If you look at the numbers they do make sense. For example the balis, they are always 2 digits, the first number is the blade length and the second designates the blade profile.

Autos are always 4 digits.

Fixed blades are low 3 digit numbers like the 140, 155, 220, etc.

And i think every benchmade model has a actual name, except maybe the 705 and 710. Pick up a 2006 catalogue and see for yourself. I ususally just use the number since some models come in large and small, that way everyone knows exactly which knife you are talking about.

All Spyderco knives have names, so people use them. Not all BenchMade’s have names, and the ones they do use are much harder to remember than Spyderco’s. I just stick to the numbers.

Some BM models actually share names anyway- Take "Presidio" for example. The 520, 523, 525, 155, 5000, 5300, 5500 all use "Presidio" in one form or another. Skirmish has several models too. I think the model numbers are just a more accurate way to convey the specific knife. I too, find myself jumping to BM's page to look up numbers for knives discussed, but have found over time I have begun to remember alot of them.

You deliberately misinterpreted what I was talking about.

Those are full names of knives.
By "Silly pet names" I was talking about how people abbreviate the full names into a cutesy "pet name"

Using your list for example-

"Mu mo"
"Tali"
"T-Mo"

That is what I was talking about.
"caly" "para" "Millie" "Yoji" Very lame.

I think the 710 has a name, I saw it somewhere once. I use names for my BMs for the most part, but people on the forums prefer to use the model #

Benchmade has knives named after two famous Irish war heroes. They are the Rukus (or Rufus) model #610, and the Skirmish model #630. Seems their pub beat the neighboring town's pub in a game of darts or street bowling.

And they just came out with an "INFIDEL" (model #3300)!

They don't have any "Ladybugs" though.

BMW has the same thing among fans. Lots of fans will refer to them by "Evolution", or what project number it was- E21, E30, E36, E90- and it leaves most people's heads spinning.

For the record- E21 was 1975-1983, the 3 series, E30 was 1984-1991, E36 1992-1998 and E90 2005-present. ;)

I don't even understand why I refer to Bm knives the way I do. My most carried knife ever is a Leopard cub, I cann't even say what the model number is without looking. :) It's even in my pocket right now. Then all my others I refer to as their model numbers, 707, 705, 710, ect..ect. As I'm thinking about it I do refer to 2 others by name the Griptillians, and the Reflex.
