Why no new folding tanto designs?

Among Spyderco collectors, the Lum tanto is by far one of the most prized knives. Why are we not seeing any new folding tanto designs?

I think Spyderco could really expand their market here.

Sal?

Hi GGlotz,

It's kinda funny, but besides the Lum Tanto models, Tantos and recurves have just not done well. Don't know why. If we were to do another, it would probably be a sprint Lum.

Soyderco fans are obsessed with sharpness and know tantos and recurves are harder to sharpen?

I could believe it. I notice alot of people on the forums and out and about, say they dont like recurves and tantos. Tantos in folding knives anyway. When it does come to tantos though, i think Bob Lum has his designs down to a tee. Cant think of one of his designs i dont like.

Tantos and recurves seem, at least to me, to be on opposite ends of the edge spectrum. Two straight edges vs one multi curved edge. The only other tanto I can think of recently is the Battlestation and, respectfully, I don't think it was the fact that it is a tanto blade that kept sales down on that one.

I agree. I have no Tantos and it's largely because of sharpening. I think after a few sharpenings I would have rounded off the corner, made it more like a Japanese Tanto.
But recurves, mild ones at least, I quite like and would like to see more of.

As a lefty who has basically sworn off right-hand liner locks, I would still almost certainly be compelled to buy a sprint of the Lum tanto folder, wrong-handed or not :)

I blame Liquid Cobra's pic,

I think a traditional straight back, curved point tanto blade would sell better that the abrupt 45 degree point tanto.
I know not to even mention chisel ground, tho.

If Spyderco did a sprint run of the Lum Tanto folder in a nice steel it would be one of the most highly sought after sprints ever!

For ME, tantos suck for EDC. I had a BM Stryker early as my only knife and gave it a good 2 years of EDC. After losing it and replacing it with a BM 795 I realized how limited tantos are. Recurves are better far and away but sharpening is no easy chore. I am 100% sold on Spyderco leaf blades as EDC champ

HAP40 and micarta ;) Antique ivory or butterscotch linen would be perfect Sal :D

Woot! Thanks Sal. I hope you and Gail have a great holiday and get some time off during Christmas.

Hey Sverre,

It was 9 degrees below zero F. at my house this morning. How cold is it there?

Hi Sal,

Thanks for your response. I'm a little surprised that tantos have not sold better. I figured there was a reason that we haven't seen more, and you know your market better than anyone.

Bringing out a Lum sprint would be a home run. Dealers would sell out in preorders.

Speaking of preorders....any ETA on the pm3? Thanks.

PM3's are coming off the lie as we speak. Will take a while to fill orders though.
