Why no new folding tanto designs?

I'm unfamiliar with the Lum tanto's specs but the look of it definitely caught my attention.

Liner lock ? How big is it ?

I'd be interested in a sprint for sure. But admittedly , I'd hope for a Ti framelock version.

Hey Sverre,

It was 9 degrees below zero F. at my house this morning. How cold is it there?

sal
Not Sverre, but darn cold here in ne ND! This morning it was -20F. This is from national weather service
Wind chills will be in the -25 to -40 range this afternoon. However, the worst is yet to come as temperatures drop down even more tonight, with dangerous wind chills in the -40 to -55 range.

Back on topic - I like the idea of lighter color scales - antique ivory, even light tan or the lighter gray G10 used on the earlier cruwear models (not Lum tanto obviously). I edc a mili or PM2, but absolutely not pass up a sprint Lum tanto! Lots of varying opinions, but please not ti framelock :) Way too much Ti on the market right now, way too many framelocks despite the availability of locks much easier to use, as strong or stronger, and less troublesome.

Too warm here. Just a couple of degrees below freezing and I have to go up in the mountains to find decent snow. I'm even working a 4 day week this year to get more slope time so it is a bit frustrating.. Not doing any races, but getting some GS training in anyway.

Freediving season is over since some ice is starting to form on the fjords, just Lance who gets to play with his Salts in the ocean all year ;) I'll be carrying one of the Militarys when skiing (nice updates on the 204P btw)

Back here in 10 days:

Hey Sal. Any sprint of a Lum Tanto would make everyone on this forums year! (especially hap40). Can you hook us up

Any reason the Lum Tanto wouldn't accommodate a compression lock?

Compression lock + g10 handles in a color other than black and it should sell like hot cakes. Perhaps have a sister model with a blade profile like the Vallotton subhilt?

Make it out of CPM-154 and I'll have to untuck my shirt.

If I may, the Japanese knife handle works so well. It looks good too. I bet Sal and Eric could design a nice tanto folder.

My vote is aTitanium with CPM 154. There are not enough knives being made in this steel.

As a side note are there any plans to discontinue the P'kal, I have to get a second one before they stop being made.

Regarding a possible Lum Tanto sprint, I would prefer a folder too. Any steel is fine with me. Ivory G-10 would be very nice (similar to the Lil' Nilakka).

Folder! Hap40, M4, 10V
peelyply G10, light color. Not Ti
whatever lock works best for the design, if Spyderco makes it it will do what a lock is supposed to do, but not RIL

The Lum Tanto folder is asked for quite often.
It is a beautiful design!

I too would be ecstatic to see a return Sprint, or even version 2 with something other than a liner lock.

Many other tanto designs seem to have been left behind in the 90s... and so was the (mostly Americanized) Tanto sales boom.

But, I for one enjoy my Terzuola Double Bevel, but it didn't gain much widespread popularity, unfortunately.

As many others have stated, a Lum Tanto folder in a higher grade steel would be just the ticket. While I have a number of VG-10 Spydercos, I like the higher grade steels for the edge holding abilities. With the Japanese heritage of the Tanto, I think Hap40 would be an excellent choice. I have a Stretch and Endura in Hap40 and find that that steel excels in edge holding and ease of sharpening. A lighter colored G-10 for scales as I find the texture of Spydercos G-10 to be pretty much spot on. Butterscotch micarta would really be something else. I have a hard time saying no to anything Sal and company puts out on the market.

As a lefty who has basically sworn off right-hand liner locks, I would still almost certainly be compelled to buy a sprint of the Lum tanto folder, wrong-handed or not :)

I blame Liquid Cobra's pic,

Haha thanks inkynate, kind of you to say. Me Lum gets all the credit there. I just pushed the button :)

A Lum Tanto Sprint would be very sweet. I'd go for ZDP & G-10 for $200-$225
