Why not peanut butter ?

All this talk of survival foods, pre-packaged and ready to eat........ I have survived on peanut butter for about 40+ years.............almost. :D

Would peanut butter in sealed jars not be great to put back for home survival situations, or even while camping.

Of course it would get old if you had to eat it every day for months, but I have ate peanut butter on a spoon for many years to give me an extra boost during the day when my calories ran low.

I honestly believe if I had a case of peanut butter in an emergency situation, I could live for months on end just by eating a spoon full every couple hours during the day.

Any thoughts on this ?

It should save ok ?

Peanut butter can be a valuable part of a food storage program. It stores reasonably well, and you can always rotate it and use your oldest stuff first so that none of it is too old. It has a lot of nutritional value - protein, carbohydrates, and oil. It is relatively high energy for the volume it occupies. Of course, for anything longer term you will need other food items to make sure you get your nutritional balance, such as sufficient calcium and vitamins A, C, and D. But PB is a good part of a balanced approach.

The one thing to consider when using PB for emergency storage is that if you plan on letting others rely on this storage, make sure none have allergies to peanuts.

Also Skippy can be bought in a squeeze tube too! Very convienient on a camping trip :)

I don't think that's viable, due to its lack of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and other essential nutrients. That said, I place it well ahead of 4,000 cases of Pringles, Twinkies, or Miller Light beer as a sole-ingredient survival diet. (note that I didn't say Guiness Stout!! ;) )

However, peanut butter is a good source of unsaturated & poly-unsaturated oils and protein in a survival diet. If you have the peanut butter as a sandwich on whole-grain bread with a glass of milk you have overcome many of the shortages of the pb all alone. Peanut butter on toast with banana slices on top is a good healthy "quick pick-me-up" afternoon snack in my world.

As for storage, it does keep a long time (not sure how long in a sealed jar), even if the oil seperates from the solids. Once opened, the peanut oil (like other organic oils) in pb will go rancid eventually. Nonetheless, I advocate having some in your food stash. Just rotate your stocks of it, like other rations.

I agree with Myakka. I like peanut butter and honey sandwiches better than peanut butter & jelly...unless it's a grilled/toasted PB & J sandwich. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches were my favorite Boy Scout hiking staple. After a few hours of hiking, usually on a warm or hot day, the honey side of the sandwich gets a kind-of sugary-crunchy texture to it, that's quite nice. Peanut butter and honey sandwiches can make you very thirsty for milk, however....

One good/great thing about both peanut butter and honey is that they can be stored without refrigeration being necessary after opening. Honey shouldn't be eaten by children under a year old, however.

And then there's the famous line from the Talking Heads' Life During Wartime: "I got some groceries, some peanut butter, to last a couple of days...."

Good information, glad to know no one thinks it's silly. I have purposely bought a couple jars ahead for about 3 years. Of course I eat them and constantly rotate.

The bananas and other breads sounds great with peanut butter. I also wondered how it would go with some of those life survival cakes everyone is talking about, (never tried one) so I have no idea if it would be edible with a slug of peanut butter on top.

Any way, I love that stuff, and I often eat it on crackers too so I just thought I would mention the possibilities.

I still have a pretty good store of canned goods and water from the year 2000 and put some back after Katrina.......:( guess it's time to do some sorting.

Peanut butter will always be my old stand by, hopefully I'll never need to "survive" on it. :D

wont bear dehydrate you

Not nearly so bad as moose.

(More seriously, high-protein can be a problem if water is short or high-energy is needed. I suggest bear and honey or jam.)

wont bear dehydrate you

Depends on the outcome. If you manage to run away, then yes, you'll be dehydrated. If the bear kills you, then it doesn't matter anymore, right? However, if you kill the bear, you can drink it's blood to quench your thirst and add bear meat to your peanut butter diet.

I love peanut butter. Unfortunetely it is not sold in Brazil unless you go to an import store and pay way too much for that little jar of Peter Pan.

No kidding every time someone comes to visit us down here I have them bring a few jars, we live well for a few months and then it runs out. Brazil has awesome french bread. I like to PB up the bread and put a little banana in it like a hotdog, great stuff. Mac

Ain't nothing better than a big ol' peanutbutter & sardine sandwich!!!! Done flang a cravin' on me just thinking about it.

You can make your own peanut butter, I'll dig up the recipe if you like.

When I was in Ranger School there was this SF guy on our team and he always traded the main meals in his MRE's for Peanut Butter and Crackers! We all thought he was crazy and EVERYbody traded with him to get beef or chicken or noodles or rice ect. He was always happy to get the peanut butter and crackers.

Then one day I compaired all of the callories in all of the meals and items IN the meals. Guess what? Peanut Butter and Crackers together in the MRE accounted for more calories than any main meal in the MRE stockpile.

I had a problem getting peanut butter in Brazil also. When I go back, I always bring a small jar.
BIG PROBLEM with peanut butter as a survival food. Who has the will power to stay away from the stuff? On a more serious note, it also makes great bait for trapping critters to supplement meat rations.
It is part of my standard food list for hiking and backpacking.

Remember, the blood has the same salinity as seawater. It's not a great solution to dehydration. Same problem with ardvark.

(Makes it extra tough to be a survivalist vampire in a desert environment.)

Love peanut butter and have several jars in our stores. Used to mix pb and maple syrup and pour it out onto homemade bread as a kid. Big lover of honey too, but have yet to mix the two. Guess I'm in for a treat.;)

If I remember the story correctly, Carlos Hathcock use to eat almost nothing but Peanut Butter while out on his sniping missions.

Peanut butter , bananna and bacon sandwhiches . O:K: So the bacon would be hard to do . You made me hungry

and I just vomited a little in my mouth... All I can picture is Elvis choking and.. ok enough..

PB is fine and if the SHTF it would certainly be better than starving but , I would not choose to rely on it as a sole source of food for longer than a couple of days. One would become incontinent I would think.
The same space a jar of PB takes, one could add some variety and better quality food.
Just IMO.
