Why not peanut butter ?

rebeltf........Gee, thanks for the description

Is there such a thing as dried peanut butter ?

Just add water maybe, wouldn't that be cool ?

As for storage, it does keep a long time (not sure how long in a sealed jar), even if the oil seperates from the solids. Once opened, the peanut oil (like other organic oils) in pb will go rancid eventually.

Most peanut butter, unless noted tends to have the oils stabilized producing trans fats. Natural peanut butter will readily and you have to keep mixing the oil back in. You can make various types of butters from nuts in a small grinder or food processor, you can stabilize it naturally with coconut oil which can't go rancid and has a host of positive health qualities. One of the big downsides to peanut butter from a survivial point of view it that it is a highly potent toxin to some people. It is very common locally, so much so that it is banned in schools. You can buy natural peanut buter and raw unfiltered honey mixed locally which is nice. In general high poly fats are to be avoided from a survival perspective because they rot really quickly, just leave cod liver oil out without keeping it cold for a few days and smell it. You are generally better off taking the nuts and eating them after preperation (soak and dry roast them) as they are much more stable.

Hey Robbie..

Your not the only person I've heard of that eats alot of peanut butter...

A old guy that lives close by here has a fairly large piece of property,,and he moves dirt,, Alot of dirt,, I mean truck loads of dirt with a wheelbarrow...

I remember some 15-20 years ago, he dug a creek through his property, a creek wide enough that you couldn't jump across, then when he was done,, connected it to the nearby creek.

He also eats Alot of peanut butter,, several times a day..

Banana and Peanut butter is one of my favorite,, however the ultimate is peanut butter and Bacon!! Ohh yaaaa...

Peanut Butter and Miracle Whip ain't bad either.... :)
Freaks out my wife though!!! :)

Eric....

A doctor friend of mine related a story where a guy ate a PBJ and went on a date with a girl who had a peanut allergy. She kissed him goodnight and died of anaphylactic shock shortly after.

I store p-nut butter put up for the feds for relief supplies. It is well packaged in steel cans.

Normark, I'll have to try the bacon deal, must be good because it's been mentioned twice so far...:D

I have only ate it with jelly, syrup, bananas and honey. Never thought to add some meat with it.

Kevin the grey, I would for sure not eat smoked oysters and peanut butter.

Peanut butter gives me lots of energy, just try eating a big thick sandwich right before bed........you'll wake up sweating like a mule pulling logs. :D

I do think Cliff is right about the overall ability to keep it good in the outdoors. It would probably be best if kept in a fairly controlled temperature setting.

This is why I think it would be pretty good for home use, should last many months sealed and kept at a moderate temperatures.

been eating peanut butter and miracle whip/mayo my whole life. hey im getting hungry. good stuff.

i don't think i've ever had PB go bad on me... and I've had open jars in my cabinet for months....

This is a refreshing thread as some fool in another thread couldn't figure out why I was recomending a PB and J sandwhich on wheat bead for a short day hike snack...

PB and J should be considered a cultural food in my book . To me it is easily digestible and a powerhouse of energy . Is it the perfect food ? Maybe not .
In the arenas we play in its damn versatile .

I got you all beat on that part. Have any of you tried PB with Soft Chocolate Spread. The one i get is made in israel its the best i think. But you can get some at Ralphs too. Thats the best i have ever tried.

Sasha

You put your chocolate in my peanut butter . L:O:L

In my own defense I was drunk when I ate the PB and smaked oyster sandwhich . While I remember it being tasty it will be a while before I try it again .

I too have never had it go bad on me . I have had it go stale with an old taste . I have had it in aluminised plastic squeeze tubes as part of C rations that left a lot to be desired . Funny thing is a 50 year old hershey bar tasted just fine .

Bottom line highly versatile food that can be a main meal or snack in the rain .
Easily stored , molded lotsa calories for its weight and tasty to boot .

Just what the hell do you drink? :(

Wow !, this is really exciting to me.........I've learned so much..:D

Peanut butter seems to be a world wide, well liked food.

It makes me happy to know that most, if not all that responded to this thread might think PB could be a source of emergency food if needed.

This is what I was hoping for........opinions on an optional source of nutrition for those of us who don't keep lots of "emergency foods" on hand.

It really makes me feel good to know that others would think it could be used as an emergency food. And that it would even taste good, this is pretty cool to me. :D

But.......I'm still not too sure about this miracle whip and PB though.........guess I need to do some more testing on this.

Even people who are not allergic to peanut butter
can get sick from eating it only.

Here are some high fat alternatives; each has its
own pros and cons.

Velveta cheese, Crisco, Lard, Canned butter, canned
bacon, Flax oil, fish oil.

Variiety is good even if you like peanut butter.

Mmmmm Laaaaard !

If I was going to get sick of P:B: it would have happened a long time ago .
I do agree that variety is important . Canned salmon is a good choice for me .
I can eat it right out of the can . No mayo or other condiments necessary .

I think one of the things I like most about P:B: is its survivability . You can smack it, crush it , sit on it and drop it off a building . All you are going to do is change crunchy into smooth .

PB will go rancid after some time, even if
unopened.

I like PB especially with a little sweetener:
sugar, honey, jam.

I did a 2 1/2 day experiment eating only
PB and honey and I did not feel good at
the end. I still like PB and would include it
in any survival or camping experiment, but
I would include other fat sources, as well.

Balance the fats with protien and carbs,
based on what you think nature will, or
will not provide. I have never secured any
carbs or fats from nature: only deer or
rabits which is almost all protien.
(I had neglected bone marrow.)

As to Lard, please consider it. Frying food
in lard, makes it very tasty. Good for morale.
Also small amounts of lard in other foods like
green beans, navy beans, any soups, will
improve the taste.

Freeze dried packaged foods are all improved
by adding butter, lard, or margarine. I got this
idea from a backpacker-food book. I have
not tried Crisco for this, yet.

frank

fnc, these are good points, thanks. I love lard used for cooking because it does make things taste so good.
