Why not peanut butter ?

You can get dry peanut butter, it is commonly known as peanuts. If you get unsalted, dry roasted peanuts they are pretty healthy. I like to add Cheerios, raisens and high-coco chocolate chips to make a quick trail mix. To avoid scurvy and rickets I would pack along some multivitamines.

OK...ya'll can call me crazy, but I hate peanut butter. I can barely tolerate the smell of the stuff.:barf:

I don't know why...I just know it's true.
To my taste buds, it is without a doubt, the worst thing ever.

OK....back to the PB love fest.

Avoid coated blades when spreading PB!!

If you think about it, Peanut butter goes with almost anything. think about the chinese menu, beef, chicken, pork, lobster, fish, all can be served "Kung Pow". one of the big ingredients is peanuts. Peanut butter is used to seal the seams on egg rolls too, so add cabbage to the list. I like it with mustard, and although I have not tried it with smoked oysters I will. If you camp or hike it is good social food also. S'mores with a little peanut butter added is pretty good too.

Peanut butter is used a lot in jails as a cheap source of protein. It sure makes their food budget go a lot further.

Peanuts were also used extensively during the Civil war by the south as its protein source as other sources of protein were getting more and more scarce. You old "kids" remember the song "Goober peas". That was a bastardized version of a confederate campfire song that they sang about all the peanuts that they were constantly eating. Peanuts have been a last (and first) ditch source of protein for a long time.

I knew there would be some important information brought up over PB........ :D

Love it !

Why doesn't some company put PB in a can so it would last for many years ?

Maybe some survival company could see the value in small cans of PB like the pop top cans that potted meat comes in......made just for survivalist.

Here is a good name........GOOBER SPREAD.........:o

I'm telling you guys that you have got to try PB and miracle whip and if ya want to add a little zing to it throw on some sweet pickle relish. Best stuff I have ever had.

The absolute best (IMO) is on hot waffles or pancakes (preferably sourdough or wheat) with plenty of mrs. Butterworth...

Great thread! I have often thought about keeping a big jar of peanut butter in the trunk of my car for emergencies. Any thoughts on the effects of temperature extremes on storage life? Will PB freeze, if so what effect will that have on edibility? How about the heat of summer?

I'd suggest keeping a container of dry roasted peanuts/nuts in your trunk, still sealed. The Planter's brand containers (and, probably, other brands....) have an aluminum foil seal beneath its lid, which I believe will help to keep them in better shape through temperature extremes.

Dry roasted peanuts/nuts have been through high temperatures already, during the process of being roasted. Dry roasted peanuts/nuts have had a lot of their moisture removed, which will help to prevent them from being damaged while being kept in sub-freezing temperatures.

Peanut butter would separate into it's constituent parts faster in a warm/hot sun (I placed a thermometer in my car's trunk on a 80-degree day one time, and my trunk temperature was up to 119 degrees after about three hours...) and, therefore, may turn rancid faster.

It might be something to experiment with, placing a jar of dry roasted peanuts and a jar of peanut butter in your trunk, and see if both are useable after a month or three....

I just bought some vacuum packed peanuts , I don't know if there is an expiration date on them, but I will try to get the package translated.
