Why people hate on tantos?

For a long time I really wanted a VECP drop point (and still do), try as I might I can never get one of the button lock versions from recent drops.

The LG Tanto is my "hot rod", has a distinct character in hand and look from everything else I own and the closest I have to pocket jewelry (based solely on looks), though I use them all...
Huge LG fan here. I have a vecp tanto in the smooth scales. Would love to have the morph.

A week or two ago the button locks were popping up like hot cakes. Keep ya eye on the exchange. I have the button lock as well, highly recommended!

How ya like that action?

Ps, I’ll keep my eye out as well.

It's great, if I had to reduce my folders down to a handful or less the LG would be in my top 3 and was my first folding tanto.
Deployment (thumb-studs) P.B, washers which are both my preference, and the size is my sweet spot for something that's not large or to small.

The morph scales are my favorite and pretty comfortable, I'd love to get the same for the button lock (in my cart from DLT then gone when I hit the payment button...), but I'd also do the "woody" version as well.
If not the button lock I'd get the VECP V3 drop point, I'm fine with XHP.

Different blades and grinds are just better for different things, but there are just some knifes that cry out for a tanto blade. When I bought my Cold Steel Recon 1 it had to be a tanto blade. The same for my Cold Steel Code 4.

You need an AD10 tanto. I have one and it’s like a silky smooth Abrams tank

So here are my pics to keep the thread going :D

Leatherneck next to AK47 bayonet that was used in 90's war.

Broken Leatherneck (batoning D2 is bad idea). But, it did start rattling very fast so I was disappointed and went to baton just for shits and giggles.

And finally, the knife that started the thread. According to my local experts - not a woods knife 🤣

I like tantos because of their reinforced tip, so I was a little bit disappointed by the hard use video of a socom elite in tanto blade by Microtech, when the tip broke at the beginning of the tests. Still a great knife though.

I don’t have much to say that hasn’t already been covered, but a good tanto blade was awesome for carpentry/ woodworking while I was in that field. And they’re definitely way easier to sharpen than a normal curved edge, personally lol.

The tanto pm2 has some sexy compound grinds going on too, hollow grind for the main blade and more of a thick convex for the tip section

I own and have owned others but never really carried/used one. I think my introduction was with Phill Hartsfield and then Jimmy Fikes in "Fighting Knives" magazine. To this day, my Fikes Tantos are the first knives I look at in my display case.

I still own my Hartsfield Kozuka, small blade, ordered from Phill in the early '90s.

Heres an interesting take on a useful tanto-ish design.. still more of a wharncliffe but similar to a tanto with the two edge angles. Its thick and could be a pretty sweet utility or bench knife, but in something better than whatever xcrxmov that crkt uses. Nice little beater design if it had better edge retention though.

Interesting factoid: The No Bother was based on a drawing by Ryan Johnson's 6 year old daughter. :)

Thats right! It’s a fun little knife, didn’t have a terrible sheath either. I just wish they had made a better steel version, but thats crkt for ya lol

Got coffee today with cream on the side.
They did not include stir stick...luckily I had my ZT 0620CF, the blade of which worked quite well (didn't want to simply pour all the cream in as I like to keep it fairly dark and bitter).

Then, after buying a turkey and a pizza, upon exiting Walmart I found a knife on the ground!
Took pictures when I got back home:

The COMMON-MAN logo pairs nicely with the EVERYMAN translation of the Edda which arrived yesterday. Coincidence, or a case of tantos being magickal and influencing the skein of destiny, bringing me this boon? Logic dictates that tantos must be magick. ;)

Here are two more pics, with them side by side for a better view closer up:

So there you have it.
Tantos are great for stirring coffee and finding you more knives, in addition to being capable of regular knife tasks. :D

Like many other styles, they can do lots of stuff. In a regular EDC context, I don't recall a day when I said either "dag, I wish I'd brought the tanto" or "gosh, I sure wish I wasn't carrying a tanto". That's not to say one blade shape isn't better at one thing or worse at another. It's just not enough of an issue to make my choice any deeper than what looked or felt good to me that morning.

That said, some knives feel better as a tanto to me. The Bradford Guardian 3.5 is one of them. Some of it is the size ratio and some is the chunky blade stock. It's the difference between okay and just right in how I feel about this knife.

On the other end of the spectrum, the thinner blade of this little Kubey folder feels just right ro me as a tanto. The non-tanto version just strikes me as "meh".

This a perfect, and well-written, post that tells the opposite experience of my post. They make perfect bookends.

Is it just me or is the American tanto the perfect do-all blade shape? Particularly if there is a slight curve to the belly and it’s hollow ground (the Recon tanto below isn’t). You can pierce with it, it slices, it cuts, you can do some fine work with the acute point and also the secondary point, it’s very sturdy. Explain to me what you couldn’t do with this blade shape, I’m willing to listen

R rlewpolar I grew up doing a decent amount of small game hunting, so when I get a fixed blade I still always have the thought of "I'll be able to skin a rabbit or deer with this right?" You could skin a rabbit with that Recon Tanto if you wanted and needed, however you'd probably be wishing you had a non-tanto part way through. However a tanto with a slight belly like that one, as long as you keep her sharp, you can really do just about anything you'd need to, I agree. If I were going to go homestead in Alaska though, I'd definitely use a non tanto blade shape.

Skinning rabbits and squirrels for me was always easier if I lopped off the feet, made a slit behind the head, slid my fingers under the fur, hold the head with one hand and just peeled off the skin with the other hand. Very fast. I

I totally agree with a rounded belly making lots of things easier for most skinning and for some camp chores.

I admit I like most blade shapes as long as they are sharp. My remote cabin/land isn’t a homestead but I have a boatload of blades when I am there🤣 Good to have choices.
