Ok, So I have read a million reviews, know the Sebenza inside and out, have held over 50 different ones, have had friends tell me they love theirs, and blah blah blah. I certainly appreciate their quality, craftsmanship and all the awesomeness that comes along with a Sebenza. The thing I don't like is the price tag, For the one that I would buy, with the wood inlays (~$400), that is a big chunk o' money. By the way, I am looking at the small version. They are nice, titanium is pretty cool, but why should i Drop that sort of money on a knife? Anyone care to lend me some of their insight? I know a lot of you guys own them. I have been toiling over this for a long time. Thanks in advance :D

Uh oh?

Lol, am walking a dangerous road with getting into an addiction here or something, lol. What's OP mean?

Esav is quite correct. The nice thing about any popular 'high-roller special' is that they retain their value quite well. If you try one and don't like it, you should be able to sell it off with minimal loss.

There are staunch fans and detractors of the Sebenza and you'll likely hear from each in this thread. OP is 'original post' or in this case 'original poster.'

Well, I own a small plain Sebenza with damascus blade. I love it and think it is worth every penny.

You will hear from steel snobs and internet metallurgists claiming CR does not HT his steel to the right hardness. But Chris Reeve actually helped develop the steels he uses, and he hardens it to achieve a balance between edge retention and ability to be easily sharpened BY THE AVERAGE USER. Not some self-described steel expert enamored of the latest super-steel.

Above said, ergonomically, the knife is not for everyone: some with large hands prefer the Large, some prefer ones with inlays to fill out the hand, and some prefer curvier handles. So I would recommend that you buy from an authorized dealer with a return policy. By holding one in your hand you will quickly realize if it fits or not.

And one final thought: some people have built the Sebenza into such an icon that many are disappointed because no knife can live up to that hype. It is just a knife, but one with superb fit, finish, and close tolerances.

Here is mine, photo taken when new (and yes, damascus can be used):

It sounds like your problem isn't with the Sebenza but with the money. Save more.

It's not with saving or having the money. It's the amount of money being spent on a pocket knife that is the issue. I mean that is a pretty hefty sum.

I mean if you've already held them and like how they are built, it's your choice man.

Then buy a knife in your price tag. Quality knives can be had for 30 bucks if you research.

sebenzas are for people who WANT one.

Locutus,

that is the sort of answer I was hoping for. I guess I just want to hear people's personal experiences with the blades. I have my preferences and my beliefs on blade steels etc. I'm not ultra nit-picky with the little nuances of heat treats and such things. I know they parts and construction are top notch with CRK knives. My main concern is what you mentioned, the feel of the knife. It's gotta feel like it "belongs" in your hand in my opinion.

If youre in California there are many stores that carry them, visit a nice shop and handle some.

Got ya, Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, I figure I'll get all sorts of answers. I just wanna see what people think about them on a somewhat personal experience level.

Not worth it for a knife you're going to use unless you're absolutely in love with that particular design.

Otherwise, it's man jewelry. Made out of the same materials as less expensive knives, but because of the name and "fit and finish", it has a high price tag. Same as a Harley.

I have wandered into Plaza Cutlery quite a few times and gawked at them. Lol.

Zl1,

I agree, Some of my best knives have been in the 20-50$ range.

I'm in the same boat. I see the benza's on the exchange and haven't been able to justify buying one. Same thing with Strider's. Spending over $200 for a knife is hard for me to justify, as now its getting into "Woah I could get a new gun with this money" territory.

Lol, Sir... You are for sure speaking my language

You should google the 2 chris reeve shop tours & youll see what goes into making one of these knives;you'd think he was making parts for the stealth bomber with his technology.not to cause flack, but compared to the inflated current markup price of a hinderer, shirogorov, curtiss, the sebenza is a bargain.....

^ all the knives i mentioned are great, but their prices are much higher then the sebenza because they are harder to get..
