Why so cautious around non-knife people

That said, I dont brandish large knives (or pistols for that matter) in an intimidating way, I just use them. I have never had anyone comment in a way that would lead me to believe they were scared.

Of course, around here, most people are really laid back about pocket knives.

That logic doesn't seem very sound.

Keep in mind that if they are scared they probably aren't going to be commenting to you/so that you can hear.

Just something to keep in mind.

I think aversion to guns and knives is, to a great extent, cultural or perhaps geographical. It seems to me that in the southern and western parts of the U.S., weapons are much more a part of daily life, even today, than in other parts of the country, especially major urban areas.
Someone, I think Hunter Thompson, once said something to the effect that city dwellers are terrified of any animal that isn't a cockroach or a poodle......stands to reason they'd be scared of any knife that isn't spreading butter on their toast.

love how that was put. As for me, I tend to just use what I deem necessary, I just do it in a respectable manner ie. I don't brandish my blades as weapons...

People like to say that but, in my experience, it is vastly overrated. I moved from the Midwest to the South and was shocked, SHOCKED by how many people down here freak out about guns or knives.

BTW: Almost every state that has an outright ban on all open carry of handguns is in the South. This includes Texas.

Well, there are certainly exceptions I'm sure. I speak only from my personal experience of the places I'm familiar with.
In most of the places I've lived carrying a knife, even a fixed-blade, on your belt is pretty common. Of course, folders in belt sheaths have given way largely to folders with pocket clips these days.

There are approximately one jillion Texans who will assert- no, SWEAR on a stack of Bibles that they DO have the right to carry a shootin arn anywhere anytime in the Republic of Texas. These would be the same folks who will tell you, in all seriousness, that Texas retains the right to SECEDE AT WILL from the U.S. Anyway, "don't mess with Texas." Whoops! Too late!

because if i pull out my 710, which I EDC, in front of a patient/coworker, then i get fired and have no money to buy more knives :D

And, in the state where it was made famous at the Alamo, a bowie knife is specifically listed in state law as an 'illegal weapon'. Ironic, sad and true, all at the same time. :(

Perfect example.

On the topic of the South and knives, here in GA a knife with a blade over 2" long is a FELONY on school OR college grounds. I'm back in school again and the largest knife I can have without being a felon is a freaking spyderco ladybug. Back in the midwest I legally carried my freaking Glock to campus.

The South has a helluva long ways to go to catch up to its reputation.

i find it sad that our world tries to solve the problem of violence by trying to limit the availability of certain things.

my grandpa would tell me about times that they'd bring their stuff to go varmint hunting after school and what not. today if you have a sak, the MINIMUM you'll get is suspended if not expelled.

it would be nice if people would wise up and realize that weapon limitations only apply to those who adhere by them. taking things away from law abiding citizens does nothing to deter criminals from having those same things. if someone wants to break the law, they will. another law isn't going to stop them

Something I forgot to add in my earlier post:

Also in the home of the Alamo (San Antonio), it's illegal to carry ANY locking blade folder within city limits (no matter the size). This was enacted to make it easier for police to 'find' something to arrest gang-bangers & other punks who otherwise might be difficult to rein in. A perfect example of how irresponsible behavior by a few, ends up creating a problem for the rest of us.

I have officially bought my 13 yr. old boys their first modern folder. It is a relatively small knife. I do not let them carry it everywhere, and I tell them to only play with it (open and close for muscle memory drills) at home. I explain to them to not brandish the knife nor show or flash. If they need to cut something, they can cover up most of the blade, and use it discreetly. I teach them that they will have more freedom to use their knife if they find ways to not expose it blatantly to others. I explain to them that there is nothing wrong with carrying a knife and using it, but to realize your surroundings are not too knife friendly. They would not know how to explain to a frantic soccer mom that CJ's kids let her son hold a weapon of mass destruction! I want them to be responsible knife nuts, like their old man. Right now, build muscle memory, use discretion, and enjoy carrying.

I feel bad for you folks around "sheep". Yall need to move out to the country. Can openly carry anything ya want around here. Hell just the other day I was out at my fishing spot, cleaning a fish with a CRK Shadow IV and had a Glock 26 on my hip. A nice lady stopped and asked how the fishing was and we ended up taslking a good 15-20 minutes. She didn't bat an eye.

Later on, he came to me to point out that the way I signed off on letters appeared overbearing because my signature was so large.

I've been thinking about complaining to Spark about your large font Bladeforums signature as well. It's very scary

This happends a lot and it scares me.

That means they can't find a legit reason to take someone they don't like off the street.....so they make one up.

Until I do something illegal, they can cry all they want. Some of you put too much importance into everyone's fears and hide as if you were some child molester.

Is it legal?
Yes.
Have a nice day.

The problem is that if everyone will have such attitude, then what is Legal now will be Illegal very soon.

My attitude has nothing to do with freedoms. Nobody makes cigarettes illegal due to the attitudes of smokers. Or gun owners as well.

What I carry is what I carry.

My employee has no issues. I haven't hurt anybody and don't plan to. Please show me where something has become illegal due to the fact that someone merely owns an object.

Just a question. How tall are you?

Chill down Chester. My wife does not feel my sons, her stepsons, are ready for knives. I do, it is something I promised them before we even met. I told the boys they would be better off not using it around her. Weird? Yes, Diplomatic? Yes. Child molester, no. Come on Jay, did you really need that reference in General?:thumbdn:

It is about public perception.
