Why so much money?

P.S. Anyone who thinks I'm being a huge jerk here, or attacking uofaengr unduly, I'd like to ask a question. Why? Why do people need to s#!+ talk what other people like, just so they can prop up what they like? Why do we do that? It's immature. Total amateur hour. Matter of fact, it should be a goal of any rational adult to come to a point where they don't need to be "that guy" anymore in their lives. What other people want to spend their time, money, or lives on is completely up to them. What you want to spend your time, money, or life doing or buying or enjoying?

Totally up to you.

Cute, but you CAN cut to the chase, more effectively...at distance... with a Glock if it comes to that...

But I do see his point. I think we're talking here about the miracles of mass production, which lessens the time involved and cost to produce a Glock. The initial cost of materials is likely not that much to account for much.
My Sebbies cost as much as a nice Glock, although both will last a lifetime.

as of two years ago the cost of materials of a g17 was $21.

No I don't know the watches because watches aren't my thing and also thought this was bladeforums rather than watchforums.

And if you would actually read my posts, particularly second post, rather than skimming looking for phrases to nitpick and flame over, you would read where I specifically state "I like nice things just like you do. I prefer good beer to natty light and a filet to chopped steak every time". I mean, i go to Ruth's Chris sometimes too, dude. So I don't know where you're getting off to I'm a "anti-luxury" goods person?? I honestly don't, and if I'm missing something, please explain it to me. I drive what I drive because there's a ton of life left in it and enjoy not having a vehicle payment every month. That money gets to go to my other hobbies or to those of us that have significant others, goes to something nice they might want. That cash also goes to our future which is more important than any toy.

I like nice things so I first got into CRK. I like a nice suit. Nice guns and bows. I've purchased plenty an expensive purse in the past for the women. Going to an island in the Caribbean for a week next week. Yeah that big check sucked because I thought about all the cool stuff we could've bought, but it's a once in a lifetime trip though I hope to return one day. So I just don't understand how I'm anti-luxury. I just don't see the need to get on the internet and pound my chest to strangers about all the cool, expensive stuff going on in my life. Since it's bladeforums I do enjoy the camaraderie and the discussion we have over our expensive and not so expensive toys, knives specifically. I think we agree somewhat on some points but maybe some things are getting lost in translation along the way.

So I didn't intend to knock anything that anyone else buys. I don't know the right way to word it, but I was just trying to make it relative to knives. We're nerds. People don't understand us. Sometimes we feel like we have to justify our purchases to others and we can get defensive. It's ok though if they don't understand...more knives for us. :)

In MHO you get what you pay for when it comes to most things. For example, I just bought a ZT 300 for $225. I admit it is alot for a Knife. But look at what I got in/with the knife. S30v blade, very solid frame lock, g-10 handles, incredibly durable DLC coating, one of the best CS departments in the industry (or so I hear, havent needed to use it myself yet), and overall just a Very well made tool that i will love, use and abuse for many years to come. But at the same time my $35 dollar buck vantage with "cheap and crappy" steel cuts almost everything atleast twice as easily as the ZT. And it has held up just great after almost year. But the zt will take way Harder use Way longer than the buck.
Pay big once or pay half 10 times

^^^^ Have to say I agree with the previous post 100%. I'll spend $750 or $1100 on a really good knife and don't think that's too crazy, while there are plenty of people who think $200 is a lot to spend on a knife. It's for the same reasons discussed in the previous post.

But I have seen some knives lately at prices that have me asking the same question as the original poster. I saw a few last night (makers to remain unnamed) listed for $3,300. And they weren't particularly interesting looking, did not use unique or expensive materials, nothing really exceptional about them....just the PRICE was exceptionally high.

If someone has the $$$$ and feels like spending it on this, that's fine with me. I just don't understand it myself. For that type of cash you can buy an ultra high-end 1911 pistol.

I get where the OP is coming from, lately I've been contemplating expensive knife purchases. I usually don't think twice about buying a knife under $400 but when I'm considering a $600-$1200 knife I start to think about what handgun I could buy for the same money. I don't think of it as a question of whether I'm getting a fair value on the knife or my monies worth but rather what else I could have if I bought a firearm. I'm sure some will make an analogy that you could spend the same money on anything else, i.e. shoes, watches, food, etc... but to me guns and knives have always gone together. Maybe because growing up hunting and scouting I always enjoyed using them on the same trips or it could just be that I equally enjoy collecting, buying, using both. In the end, for me, I tend to be cyclical or what I would refer to as what mode I'm in... "gun mode" or "knife mode". Depending on what mode I'm in will determine where I spend my discretionary funds. To complicate things further, throw in a third hobby (r/c heli's) and pontification about what I could have for the same money becomes even more difficult. In the end it's simply about choices and what makes you happy. It's all a distraction anyway, for most of us, unless of course you're using your knives and guns to survive or for investment!

This.^
I can be happy with a Sodbuster in my pocket or an SnG. I just prefer the SnG, albeit the high price.

Funny. :D

I feel the same way.

Some of us have come to the point in our lives that we just don't care what other people think anymore so even if we do like luxury items we just don't buy them...

Personally I could care less what car someone drives, what watch they have on etc....

It doesn't mean anything to me at all.....

So I have no problem driving around in my 05 truck or my 06 Jeep, I don't wear a watch, haven't for years, and jeans and a T-Shirt are normal attire for me, that's normal jeans......

I could care less about the people I know who do drive X or Y cars etc.... And I have no problem pulling my 05 Truck right next to their BMW etc.....

Not trying to empress anyone, one has to care about what other people think to do that....

So if a person can't pull up to their buds in a packing lot driving a stock 05 Civic, a Timex, Wal-Mart Jeans and off the shelf T-Shirt without feeling embarrassed they need to find some new friends and or work on their own issues...

That's a great post, Jimmy.^
I stopped wearing jeans years ago. I get nice comfortable pants at our thrift store. At my age, I am built for comfort. :D

I can get a Marlin Model 60 for under $150, or I could spend around $1000+ for a Anshultz rifle. Both shoot .22lr so what's the difference?

Same applies to varying prices on knives.
Performance. You could put a .22 in a small pipe and hammer a flat head screw driver into the rim and it will "shoot .22." There's a reason why a lot of pros shoot Anshultz rifles. Their triggers are truly a work of art. Adjustable in every way imaginable
