This is probably a crazy questions but why are spyderco knives so popular? I have only ever had one (old police model) in my hand it was. Nice I don't think to much of the astetics of it tho. So what makes them so speacial? Are the news ones as tough as the old er ones?

They're well made, the company listens to it's customer base, and the knives have a distinctive look and feel to them. Also, they were one of the first companies to put out serrated knives that were worth a damn.

Reasons why Spyderco is so popular in no particular order:

Overall Quality
Affordable
Ergonomic
Variety of Steels
Variety of Locks
Variety of Handle Materials
Sprint Runs
Spyder Hole
Jimping

Sure you will get more answers.
New Knives are as tough and tougher than the old ones in my opinion.

i was put off by the looks at first. i bought one, fell in love with the hole. Same thing happened with my ole lady i guess.

Ahahaha that's awesome!

I'm same boat, I always found the looks odd, but I recently bought a Sage Ti and fell in love with it. Absolutely amazing knives. And not spendy (hint hint, go try one :) )

The easy answer, Spyderco gives people what they want. They are one of a handful of companies that really listen to us and take what they hear to heart.
Other considerations are the fact that they have been one of the most innovative knife companies out there, and consistently so.
The offer a wide variety of quality steels, high end handle materials, and all at a price around half of their leading competitor (with equal quality).

The designs tend to focus on ease of use and comfort over looks (although, on some models more than others). All in all, they seem to have worked very hard for their position as many people's favored knife manufacturer.

HAHAHA, oh, wow. That's how it goes sometimes. :p

The spyderhole is probably my favourite opening method. Easy and comfortable to use with gloved/ungloved hands, doesn't get in the way while sharpening or cutting, and is extremely versatile. :D. Once you get over the funny look of the big hole in the blade, you'll find out spydercos can be very useful and well made, just like other companies out there.

Baskin Robbins of folding knives! So many flavors. Marketing genius that has created a cult following and a constant buzz online. Quality for a good price. Designs that are just FUN and COOL. I got hooked just last year with my first one, a Caly 3 in carbon fiber. Now I'm up to 37 of them! And, I've got my eye on a bunch more. No other knife maker has gotten my attention, honestly.

Why not?

Their quality and customer service is outstanding!

They are more humble knives from a humble company that are designed and built to last a lifetime in the toughest of times and conditions.

Some might say they are ugly knives (which in my opinion they are), however I would much rather own an ugly knife that is well built instead of a cool looking knife that is poorly built. That is why I own many Spydercos.

Give them a shot, I promise they will never let you down.

best affordable knives right out of the box. IMO, sage 2 was the best value for what i paid. there are of course better knives out there, but for the money, i grab my lum or sage before my sebenza

Spyderco knives are popular with users because they cut stuff really well, they are comfortable to use, the quality for the price is a very good value, and they listen to their customer base. They also offer a good selection of premium steels on affordable knives, best in the industry.

Quality, performance, value....from a company that is enthusiastic about development and innovation and strives to dedicate itself to an admirable set values. Spyderco is led top down by a man who works hard at walking his talk. Personally I appreciate that Spyderco allows each of their creations to speak for itself without any over-the-top fanfare. Their products rarely miss the intended mark. When they do, Spyderco takes responsibility to remedy the issue. It's a good way to run a comany...and raise kids, too.

I can't find a knife like the Delica. I require these things:

1. A good steel (VG-10 is a really good steel, if you ask me)
2. A comfortable handle (it's comfortable now that I ground down the middle hump)
3. An opening system that doesn't make me fumble around trying to open the knife (hole works great)
4. Tip-down carry, or at least the option for it
5. A good, reliable locking system
6. A blade shape and grind optimized for cutting (FFG is great)

If some other company could do knives like that, I'm sure they'd be popular, too. For my purposes, Spyderco makes the best knife.

Very well put, I agree totally.

All the reasons stated before are spot on but for me, they just work. They do look kinda funky to some people (myself included) before you handle one but once you do, everything about the design just makes sense. The hole is one of the easiest openning methods around, the handle texturing, where they put the jimping, how the clip rides, etc. It all adds up to a knife that is very user friendly and a joy to use. Like THG said, for me, the Delica 4 (FFG and Emerson openner versions in particular) is one of my all time favorite knives...and its near the top of my list too. There is honestly nothing bad I can say about the Delica 4 and depending on the version, it'll only cost you $50-$60.

Because the bit of extra money you spend on a Spyderco is equal to or exceeded by the quality of the product. Your money is well spent.

Couldn't have said it better. "Personable" doesn't come close though.

Not long after signing up here I had a business trip to Denver Colorado. I made time and took a ride to Golden and stopped by the factory store. I had talked to Sal here on BF and he let me know I was welcome to ask for him when I got there. He showed me around the store and also showed me the new-at-the-time fixed blade Salt knives before they were even available.

The cool part was, I thought Sal was an employee and had no idea who he really was. He took time from his busy day to show me around. Even showed me some of his Randall Made knives.

I have the highest respect for the man and his knives.
