why spyderco?

What knives do you like maxamisprime? I think form follows function. You can not like the looks but it works and works well. To me that makes it beautiful.

Spyderhole, ergonomics and bang for the buck. Design is not ugly to me (even though I only really like a few), more unique imo and easily recognizable. I made the mistake of selling my Military and feel like I am always missing something, so I just ordered a satin and black blade :D Sebenzas and other high end etc, are really nice and fun to own but for a user, nothing beats a Spydie!

This is probably a crazy questions but why are spyderco knives so popular? I have only ever had one (old police model) in my hand it was. Nice I don't think to much of the astetics of it tho. So what makes them so speacial? Are the news ones as tough as the old er ones?

Military.

Also, Spyderco is like an explorer in a sea of steel types, and no-one else really ventures very far. If I want more fancy steel, I need to buy more Spyderco (Kershaw does pretty well sometimes too).
Also also, they have a very down to earth style. They make knives to feel good in your hand, not look good. They won't put flames and skulls or anything like that on their knives.
Also also also, the Spyderhole is one of the best opening methods, I count it second only to the flipper. Other companies have been allowed to use a "hole" without licensing since the patent ran out 6-7 years ago, but given that the hole is still the Spyderco trademark, they are guaranteed to use it on every knife.
It helps that thumbstuds are usually placed too far out on the blade. If they get in the way, I either remove them or grind the studs off as part of the sharpening process. The thumbstuds on most knives get in the way.

(I would keep going but I ran out of "also"s.)

Why Spyderco?

Because I'm a steel junkie, and Sal feeds me:D.

CTS-XHP, S90V, CTS-20CP, and many other unique steels on the market are available in his sprint run knives. And frankly, having S90V and carbon fiber in a single knife for less than $200 really makes me feel like I'm almost stealing from him:eek:. Fit and finish are excellent with little to no blade play. Oh, and the heat treat. The heat treat is just right:thumbup:.

Right now I'm carrying a kershaw leek with tini finsh and partial serations and as a back up I have a crkt minimalist. The only spyderco I've held was my teachers old police model he got it when it first came out and used it extensivly I was impressed to see that there was no blade play or serious dammage.

Spyderco offers great value for their knives. I am a fan of another big company that gets ragged on here for various reasons and I will be a fan of them until I die. I didnt like Spydercos until I bought my first one and now I have more knives from Spyderco than any other brand. I like that they offer a wide variety of steels which is mainly why I own so many Spydercos.

Sal is a great guy too.

Haha I love Bada's comment.

I, however, haven't come to love the hole. I still like thumbstuds better. But Spyderco pays more attention to blade steels (and good heat treats) and grinds than any other major production company. Their variety of exotic blades is unparalleled. Where else can you get a rust-proof, fully serrated hawkbill? Plus, they are a very honest, open company, that will freely talk about details about their production and design.

That's a good summary. I'd emphasize that they are consistently the most innovative and experimental with blade steel, and usually have the best HT among production companies.

Spyderco continues to raise the bar on quality, consistency, designs and brings to market more different steels than anyone else. Spyderco's HT is the best IMO on the market now for production knives, they are very consistent and push the hardness for edge retention. Their blades are designed for max performance cutting and slicing.

In the Sprint runs we see steels and materials only found in custom knives costing a lot more. Spyderco brings them to market at affordable prices that we can afford.

There are a lot of features built into their designs that are only seen on custom blades.

Sal Glesser is in a class by himself.

+1  I couldn't have said it better!

Try one - you will be amazed. No other knife company can hold my attention. :)

I will start by saying that I am a hard core spydienut. 95% of my EDC knives are spydies. I have yet to find a knife that matches my spydercos in the price/quality category. From the golden models to the Seki models to the Taiwanese models the fit and finish on them is amazing. I also really enjoy how innovative they are with their models be it handle design, to blade steel to the locks. They also offer a hell of a lot of blade material choices which are hard to pass up. I would have to say the main reason I stay with spyderco is the way that I have see Mr. Glesser treat his customers and his competition.

They cater to their customers. What we want, they make. They don't charge more than they need to for their knives. Think about it--a knife in S30V from benchmade is a minimum of $150..from spyderco, you can get one for $50. Companies have knives for $250+ in stuff like s30v. From spyderco, their high-end stuff uses Ti/Micarta, CPM-m4, S90V etc, and it's still cheaper! Plus, the quality of manufacturing and attention to important details. A good example is heat treating--I believe spyderco's heat treat for S30V is better than CRK's even the Reeve's cost $350! Most knives in ZDP 189 retail for $300+ that I've seen...Spyderco has them as low as $70! This is cutting edge, high end stuff, for very affordable prices. Plus, their designs just work great. They feel good in hand. They have a good variety of choices, so if "aesthetics" are what you want, they have knives more geared toward that. But they are functional first and foremost. I defy you to look at a Caly 3 in CF and tell me that's not a work of art.. and when you hold it in your hand, it's clear that it's more than eye candy

I think Spiderco has got a very good marketing strategy and also is quite effective in implementing it. I gelieve they are constantly reviewing how successfull their own products are, analysing the trends, developing new product to stay ahead of competition. They are also quite clear of their target market and niche - and do their best to exactly match the expectations of their target audience... That are their secrets...
If they were just trying to produce and sell knives of the best and newest design, from the best materials, for the best price and of the best possible quality (as their funs claim) - they would most likely stay just a small knife company, one of many. ;) :D

awesome value ad cut great, feel great in hand and the hole is way easier to uses in awkward positions than a stud

I only own 2 folders. I have a Kershaw Tanto Blur and a Spyderco ParaMilitary. That's it.

My fascination with knives is almost exclusively limited to fixed blades. I have a lot of them, e.g. Al Mar, Ek, 4 Esee's, Buck, TOPS, custom, Cold Steel, several Moras, etc.

I go to knife and gun shows and lock right in on the fixed blade models and ignore the folders. I see folders as utilitarian "users" with little or no aesthetic value or appeal. I realize that this defies conventional logic and it should probably be the other way around. A folder has moving parts and different mechanisms. I can't explain it but, as many here will attest to, there isn't much rhyme or reason to being a knife nut.

Having said that... I can't imagine a better design or better ergonomics than the Spyderco ParaMilitary. It could be that I am so satisfied with it that I have no temptation to try and find anything better. I have an original Para. I carry it almost every day and I love it.

Spyderco's "spider" looks more like a tick than a spider and I wish all of their stuff was made in Golden, Colorado, like mine was. Other than that, they hit a home run with their ParaMilitary folder in my opinion. Great knife.

I dont know if i can get over the asthetics of the hole,Never gave them a shot because of that.
