I mean, I get they have some good knives And they use good steel, but so many of their knives are ugly, and by ugly I mean they always find a way to ruin a knife by adding a thumb hole that looks like a hawk eye, making the blade fully serrated, or the top part of the knife is normal, then out of the blue it races tward the sky to fit a thumb hole, and the knife becomes super ugly. Or they'll use weird shaped handles, I don't get it. Spyderco Also liked to make the blades super wide to fit the thumb hole and give a HUGE amount of thumb ramp, I'm not sure if I like that, an example would be their paramillitary, I prefer when their knives look like the sage 2, it looks normal then, like the blades suppose to look like that rather than look like someone cut a portion out on accident. I know a lot of people love their knifes, can you tell me why? Hopefully I'll like them soon enough.

This thread ran just a couple of weeks ago. :) I'll race you to see which of us can find it faster with search. :D

Because they care about how a knife functions -- useful blade grind/shape, foolproof opening mechanism (the trademark Spydiehole that you think "ruins" the aesthetics of so many of their knives), extremely ergonomic handle shape (ditto) -- rather than how it looks.

P.S. The "Spydercos are ugly/please explain Spydercos to me" topic has been done to death. Do a search as suggested above. :)

by a para 2. carry the knife and you will be biting your tongue.

only thing i can say if you don't like them don't buy one. but they are by far one of the top knife co's out there. listening to customer input for 30 some years and always changing designs due to customers wants and preferences. and they are by far one of the best knives for the money in my eyes. and i love the thumb hole its elegant and practical. and every company has their rendition of their hole'd opening system and none can hold a candle to the spydy hole.

seriously though go buy a delica or an endura both could be had for 30-40 dollars and carry it for a week or so and you will want to upgrade

I will search it. And I understand there great knives, but I prefer my knife to have a sleek look along with all the stuff you guys suggested, benchmade for example really rocks it for me, all their knives have a nice design that's highly functional. And I love the hole, don't get me wrong, I just wish they would lower it a little bit, and atleast try a rhumb stud every once in awhile, even if it sacrifices a full flat grind which I also love.

Buy a Manix 2 and youll understand. It doesnt have the hump like your talking about. It's more gradual like the sage. In fact the sage is the 2nd spydie I've ever had (delica being the first) and it's the one that got me addicted. But the Manix2 is my current favourite, and what's not to like with so many flavours to choose from.

I actualy really like the manix 2
And something that also concerns me about spyderco is they hardly have any fixed blades! I for one love myself a good fixed blade.

The Sage 4 is the first Spyderco I felt any draw towards, purely based on aesthetics. Ergos are fine, though I'm not a fan of the tip-up only carry. Tip-up kills a lot of Benchmades for me, too. The beauty of the market is that there are so many makers with so many products that you're bound to find something you like from someone. The only benefit of focusing on markers and models that you don't like is that it's cheaper than focusing on the ones you do.

Spyderhole is for more versatile opening. Left or right handed from any position without digging at your finger(also reducing weight). Smoother system. Spydercos are beautiful. Function over form. And they achieve great functionality so much that its a work of art. They are beautiful in aspect that they are made to be what a knife is. Not a thing that looks shiny. A knife that is sharp and great design. Even the smallest curve in the blade or angle is done on purpose. Trust me on this.

Here's the thread I was thinking of (six pages!). http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...p-me-understand-spydercos!?highlight=Spyderco

There's a lot of good discussion in it, along with some steam and good-natured disagreement. :)

Some knives have a much lower profile on the hole than others. I'd say, for example, that the Paramilitary is pretty low profile (but YMMV).

Adding to this, the Native and Des Horn also have very low-profile opening holes.

but so many of their knives are ugly

Well, those are the ones that you won't be buying, right? I own tons of Spydies, but there are some that I'm just not into - either in terms of function, aesthetics, or both. The good thing is that no one makes us buy knives we don't like. But having options is good, and a manufacturer who gives us a full spectrum of choices is doing just that.

That's a good point, but when on the forums all everyone talks about is spyderco, I get their functional, but so are aloe of other knives that are a bit more asteticly pleasing. Spyderco and Becker* is what everyone talks about.

I have been hit by cars running reds/stopsign 3 times in the past 10 months. No clue why i keep getting hit. But my edc (paramilitary 2) didnt even have a scratch on the G10. High quality materials make it durable. Great ergos in hand, fluidity in motion, and design. There is no real way you can get the same quality doing anything different. A pretty wood handle would have been destroyed the first month of owning my edc (PM2). Quality cannot be sacrificed. If they means its not going to be a "pretty knife" then thats good because you get what you pay for and you wanna pay for quality.

I once felt the same way. My son bought me one in August 2011. I now have 10 and I'm sure more will follow. Drink the kool-aid my friend, you will be enlightened. LOL

This is why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. I may not care for vanilla, but the people who do aren't wrong.

I've tried over a dozen different Spydercos and have only found two that I'd consider owning. But I don't think any less of the company or its products.
