Why the big deal on swearing on this site?.

haha good point nutz

all thi commotion over swearing is purely an american thing
and very hypocrital

here in europe we can swear all we want, on tv and etc.

and kids swear all the time just as well

in fact wearing is good against stress and good for the heart :)

Maybe thats it im in the UK and swearing in my life is something i will never escape unless i went and lived in the wild.
When i was in America people in genral were more polite and freindly.

These_Nutz, that's a good question. I was going to go into a long explanation, but jim preston and Brian Jones covered it for me. :)

Just a few highlights: this IS a private forum and the rules are the rules. But they are in place for good reason. Swearing is inflammatory. We actually have three levels of subforums here.

The family forums outlaw swearing and insulting, but we also have forums like Whine & Cheese and FEEDBACK where we allow them. We also have forums like the Political Arena and Practical Tactical where we understand that controversial subjects will get overheated responses from time to time, and we try to control this without shutting down the discussions altogether.

We do have a very diverse membership. The less we provoke each other, outside of forums designed for that, the better. There is no absolute need for swearing, just as there is no need for smilies. Some people find both useful. Some find them inappropriate. Forum management doesn't need any avoidable controversy.

Thanks only sensible reason ive read.

By the way, I thought it was funny you asking Spark why he could say those things but you would not be allowed to. Of course, Spark owns Bladeforums and pays the bills. :)

Yes, Kiahs posted this on another thread.

Really. It's odd to me when people cry "freedom of speech" on a privately owned forum. It's like camping in someone's yard and yelling about how you have the right to camp on public land.

This forum is not a democracy. It's ruled by King Spark and flies this flag.

I wish this would get moved to Whine & Cheese so I could swear. :p

ules, so kids aren't allowed here.

That said, different forums have different styles of moderation. I don't think we have a "swear word" infraction (last I checked) but if you insist on being uncouth, some moderators won't encourage you, or, will actively discourage you.

There's an "Inappropriate Language" Infraction that I've seen issued before. Its worth 1 point.

Bob

You'll notice I said:

"Only the weak minded NEED to swear to get THEIR POINT across."

I do not have much of a problem with swearing , I was replying "These_Nutz" who seems to think that using swear words makes it easier to convey a point.

Al

As for Nutz, I don't know and I don't care what point he may have been trying to make.
I (emphasis on the "I") believe that swear words ARE at times the best/most accurate word for the job largely because of their unique emotional quality. Some words, or group of words are very similar in personality to others but NONE are exactly the same.
A larger vocabulary allows for more precise language which leads to more precise thought.

As George Carlin said; "There are no BAD words." And I agree with him.

Now, to your statement;

I understand the difference (subtle, IMO) that you are pointing out with the use of extra emphasis. And If I had read it that way yesterday, I may not have been so quick to take offense. (I did go off sort of "half cocked" so to speak) And I must confess that I was not aware of the history of this subject originating apparently in some other thread, (which I still have not read, nor do I plan to) so maybe he deserved it.

But taken out of that other possible context, It still appears contemptuous and intolerant to ME.

Anyhow, I'm willing to concede to the technical meaning of your statement as emphasized in the above quote, and apologize for my quick temper.
I hope there are no hard feelings.

Sincerely, CM. - Brother of the Blade

PS. This has not been a good thread for me, so I'm gonna GTFO!!!

Listen, I have gutter mouth in person, so I hear ya. Or read ya. But you've heard the reasons for it not being here...in my wilderness forum, we wilderenss types tend to be pretty salt of the earth. Sometimes, i'll just change a bad word to asterisks, or dometimes I leave it alone altogether.

If someone starts using swear words to insult, or to obviously instigate trouble, then I'll start to get pissed (sorry, p***ed :D) and hit them with infractions.

Context has a lot to do with it.

Like I said awhile back, you guys (moderators) have been MORE than fair.

I just had to leave because I got tired of apologizing for poorly conceived posts.
But as you can see I just couldn't stay away.

Maybe I shouldn't have gone off my medication!?!

Is he a cop too? Seems like he feels he is above the law. (just like a typical doughnut muncher)

jk904jk, we are in Bladeforums Service & Support, not Whine & Cheese. Perhaps you didn't understand what I was telling you, even though you quoted it. Spark is the owner of Bladeforums. He is the only one authorized to make the rules for the forums.

This has nothing to do with the law. Bladeforums is a private enterprise and the owner can do as he pleases. Guests cannot, paying or otherwise.

Last chance. You are not coming across as funny.

Among the wisdom of my sainted father were these two seemingly-contradictory bits of advice:

Never judge a book by its cover, and first-impressions are lasting impressions.

These two old sayings seem to be at odds until you realize that the first talks about how you should act yourself and the other talks about how others will act.

Bladeforums.com is the largest and most popular internet discussion site about knives. Google "knife discussion" and bladeforums.com is the top hit. People who have even a passing interest in knives and do a little research will find this place quickly and easily. And when they do, we as the knife community will get a chance to make that lasting first impression.

There's already a lot of stereotypes about knives and knife enthusiasts. A typical conversation goes, "You collect knives?"

"Yes."

"Isn't that just a little... well... morbid? What are you, some sort of psycho or something?"

Much of the world has some very clear stereotypes about people who are interest in knives. It doesn't help when we reinforce those stereotypes.

yet i cant make a very simple swear word that gets across a point faster and better.

If you cannot get your points across effectively without swearing, then I suggest that you work on your vocabulary and your writing skills.

its out of respect for other members. some have kids that might be unknowingly looking over their shoulder reading a post along with them. what good would it do if you were careful not to use swear words around your kids or read anything that might have swear words and they end up reading it here on the forum? i have no problem with it in w&c or wherever else its allowed on the forum.
