Why the dislike on using a dishwasher with a top cutlery tray for SS knives

You guys wash your knives?

In all seriousness I hand wash using soap and water. I was using a coarse scotchbrite pad at first just to see how much it would scratch the blade. But this is my R&D chef knife which is destined for refurbishing anyway, after which it will be washed with soap and water still but a cloth instead.
 
I also spent some time working as a dishwasher. You might be surprised to learn that even the so called industrial strength dishwashers leave a ton of debris on dishes and cutlery unless it is partly pre washed by hand, which was the standard procedure where I worked.
 
400 series stainless steels are not as resistant to corrosion as 300 series stainless steels. They can develop rust on the micro edge which lowers the BESS score (sharpness). 300 S/S is not hardenable so it is not used for knives.
 
Thank you for all the replies. Adding to my OP, we usually use a lot of knives daily, and I have a lot of kitchen knives.
If it is one knife, that I will need again soon I will hand-wash it. If it is a few and not immediately needed and the dishwasher is going on anyway, the answer is simple.

I have knives that have been getting washed this way for over 20 years. As I said the wooden handled ones get varnished every few years.

I also take the knives out of the dishwasher as soon as they are washed and dry them, so that possibly helps.
 
I just dont do it because it takes 30 seconds to rinse off a knife in the sink and I can clean it better than a dishwasher

I use scolding hot water only from the sink and a brush, takes less than 10 secs.

Here is two of the same knife, the famous Norwegian "housewife knife"(husmorkniven). Best bread knife I've tried, also does a lot more; it's designed to be an all purpose kitchen knife.

Managed to find an unused one a couple of years ago(they stopped making these mid 80s). So here is a pretty unused one, never been in the dishwasher vs one that has 1000s of trips in there and 30+ years of use.

U can see how dry and bleached the wood is, it's also rattling due to the shrinking of the wood vs the darker prestine one.

We have beater knives the wife uses that are allowed in the dishwasher. My good knives that are really sharp don't go in and I take care of them. The ones that go in are rarely very sharp, so they cut more like butter knives, fine for softer things but I'm not going to cut a few pounds of veggies with them. The knives are lasting fine, are cheap enough that I don't really care if they get ruined, and it makes things convenient for us.

The good and very sharp knives, handwash only. From my experience, sharpness is the main reason. SS and synthetic materials will hold up fine to the hot water, maybe not a hot dry (which we don't use anyway) but the edges seem to lose sharpness quickly.
 
Oh I don't know...... why? Now granted this is a carbon steel rehab. But look at the inside of the handle material not the tang. This is the result of throwing in a sink full of water and also the dishwasher.

Somehow the high temperatures that the dishwasher can reach and the long time in it with time it can damage the knives edge, cause a handle to slowly get loose and seriously we are not doing surgery with them 😁. As stated by others 10 seconds to hand wash them and they good to go.
 
I did a decade stint running a kitchen. It's habit. Safety more than anything else.

Knives get hand washed and put away because they are dangerous. Either they are in use, or put away. Policing them like this is the only way you can truly guard against somebody losing a finger.

Really depends on the dishwasher
Probably best not to, dishwash knives that is. Lots of labels say dishwash safe, hand wash recommended. The rubber coating on my dishwasher racks have worn away exposing rusted tips, so they have rusted most of the butter knives. Best practice is just to hand-wash knives you care about, right? So, problem solved, now we can move onto other threads 👌🕺
 
I think the heat and the caustic washing solution (sodium carbonate -- "washing soda") are what dry out/crack/curl/destroy wooden handles the most...I just hand wash them.

It's just gentler on them that way. Kinda the same reason I don't wash the kids with the 3.5 ksi Detroit Diesel pressure washer.

For those that have used the dishwasher on wood handled kitchen knives, some Wicked Wax applied to the scales will help restore some of the damage. Yes, I am guilty of using the dishwasher but I have reformed my ways. :cool:
 
Why does anyone put their knife in a dishwasher? It takes a minute or two to wipe the blade after use.

When we remodeled our kitchen about 5 years ago, I successfully talked my wife out of a dishwasher. I can understand it’s usefulness in a commercial setting, but for two people it is a waste of space, energy and time.
 
Dishwashers make modern life, well, modern! Using them leaves more time for more important tasks, like making sweet passionate love to my spouse, or sharpening knives, or watching Seinfeld re-runs.

Cars are also expensive and wasteful, but who's gonna walk five miles to buy groceries? There is no way in hell I would buy a house without a dishwasher- I just don't want to live like it is still 1900, just to act virtuous. I am not an Amish dude!

When I was a little kid, my father took out our dishwasher and put in a separate beer fridge....... Just one of Many life's lessons I got growing up..... I Should write a book.

Wow! I don’t wash dishes by hand to be “virtuous” or to be Amish. I do it because it’s quicker and easier and does a better job.
