Why the dislike on using a dishwasher with a top cutlery tray for SS knives

I didn’t mind doing the dishes for my wife and I after we were married. With a small army at home now, No way I’d do it all by hand now.

Wiping a knife off after use is not the same as sanitizing it. You won’t get a lecture from me, but no way I want to give my small army salmonella.

Now are we talking about real knives or eating utensils;)?

I had put my Henckles/Wusthof (can't remember which) bread knife in the dishwasher regularly, and it has the black celloid-ish slab handles. The hand cracked and fell off, revealing a tremendous amount of rust between the handle and tang. Hand wash from now on.

I looked and did not see my favorite answer to this one. I was at a very large knife store very well known store so I won't come out and say it. The sales guy told the customer. You can not put these in the dishwasher because they are ice hardened and the temperature in a dishwasher would soften the steel. Started laughing to hard to even correct him. I just walked off.

this has been a pretty common "theory" that the heat of the dishwasher will damage the temper of the knife. Anyone who has ever tempered a knife or read a bit about it knows this is not going to happen as the temperatures the water can reach, even when boiling, are not high enough.

I assume this "theory" is propagated by the anti-dishwasher lobby. :)

Wow hadn't heard that one before! No the dishwasher is not going to anneal your steel.
