From a brief editorial article online I sourced this quote.

“The West of which I speak is but another name for the Wild; and what I have been preparing to say is, that in Wildness is the preservation of the World. Every tree sends its fibers forth in search of the Wild. The cities import it at any price. Men plow and sail for it. From the forest and wilderness come the tonics and barks which brace mankind. Our ancestors were savages. The story of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf is not a meaningless fable. The founders of every state which has risen to eminence have drawn their nourishment and vigor from a similar wild source. It was because the children of the Empire were not suckled by the wolf that they were conquered and displaced by the children of the northern forests who were.” Henry Thoreau, “Walking” A lecture published posthumously by The Atlantic Journal

you can find the rest here: http://www.purcelltrench.com/wilderness.htm
So that's why the Taiban is so tough.
And the Vietcong.

Romulus...
He killed his own brother Remulus.

And from then on all these Emperor's were killed after a few years of being in power. Not only Caligula.it was all treason and deception (even to their own family). As is today but less bloody.
I think only Agustus died of old age.
Varus was some bad clown too fom what i know about him.
Greedy ,cruel.
But then again.Arminius tricked Varus. Many Legionairs saw this through but Varus didnt have the brains to see and listen to smarter ones when he's walking into a trap.It was not an open battle with the Legions forming cohortes, just a thin lint of them walking through the field being ambushed from all sides .Even the German Cavalery turned against their own troops.
Let's not forget that Arminius was killed by his own people a couple of years after this slaughter of three legions. He wasnt loved much by his own either.
Germanicus took revenge, but the Romans never went back into Germania as they did before.

Too wild of a bunch them Germans

If the shiz hits the fan, how about having a plan that involves what you have already, and not munching ferns and squirrels?

You haven't lived until you've had fern and squirrel soup.
