These days I risk being thrown out of the local shopping mall if I forget where I am and leave a leatherman on my belt when going to shop.
Where in the heck do you shop? Barring airports and public schools, I generally have a mini-Griptilian visibly clipped to my back pocket. I'm also a male in his mid-20s, not a grandfatherly type, yet I still have been spoken to about the knife all of twice in the last six years.
Both times were bouncers in nightclubs (one in smalltown Texas, one in downtown Los Angeles), who simply said "sir, you'll have to leave that at the front desk while you're here."
I do run across various folks who find it odd that I carry a knife, but most don't seem bothered. And as mentioned before, about everyone I've ever given a knife was very pleased to get it.
Got two Spyderco/Byrd Robyn knives to give as gifts. One is for my brother who works on movie sets (gave him a Leatherman a few years back that he uses all the time). I figure it's just big enough to be useful for light tasks (but more than office work), but small enough to be "cute."
