Quick question. And no its not a which one is better.:D

I have several Benchmade with uneven grinds from the factory. i think that is why i cant get them quite as sharp as some of my other knives. i have tried freehand but i am not consistent enough in the angle. Once the knife has a good bevel i can keep it sharp (decently) freehand. Nothing great.

So the question, if I get one of these systems mentioned above, will that allow me to put on the BM knives a new even edge? and I assume with the extra fine stones and strops you can get them almost mirror edge and hair popping?

I assume that the Lansky and Edge pro can do this.... I have heard good things also about Wicked edge, just want to make sure before i drop the money on a not so cheap system

thanks

Bought an Edge Pro in 1997. Money very well spent. You'll get much good use and enjoyment from one. Just look at the work above!:D

I have had both and I like the Wicked Edge. I get perfect edge lines and the WE is easier to use IMO

Very Nice Jim! It is amazing how bad an edge BM puts on. I have one knife come from them that had a decent edge.

Yet another nice Edge Pro job.

Hey Jim, what was your grit steps and how did you finish to get that polished finish. It looks great. Oh and since that blade has a slight recurve did you use the 1/2 stones?

Which one is the original edge? The top one or the bottom?
Take a guess. If you said original was on the bottom, you are correct. It fact that a high number of Benchmade knives come with horrible edges from the factory.

You will need to reprofile the edge, lay down a new bevel. The Edge Pro works great as seen in the pics.

I use the standard stones. :)

120 - 1000 grit stones then 2000 and 6000 grit tapes.

EdgePro and Wicked Edge make the best systems on the market. Either system will do what you want. They are both excellent. I've had both, and I kept the Wicked Edge because it's easier, less messy (no water to splash around) and because it creates the most precise edge bevel and does so regardless of distal taper.

The EdgePro has more stones and polishing tapes, so it's better at creating a mirrored edge. The EdgePro appears to be more popular here, but I'd guess that's because it's been around a lot longer and because it is an excellent system. Wicked Edge is still new. Few people have tried it, and it is expensive. Of people who've had both systems, I've seen a few prefer the EdgePro but most like the Wicked Edge better.

There's a real sense of craft and precision with the Wicked Edge. The knife clamps into a perfect vertical position, with the vertical and horizontal position precisely locked in. You can work both edges without changing the position of the knife. The sliding diamond stones are fast and smooth. With the edge sticking up, you can easily see what's happening to the edge by using a loupe.

Nonetheless, everything is a matter of preference. You'll never know which system you like better until you try both. Unfortunately, both of these systems are expensive. The odds favor the Wicked Edge, but we're all different.

You'll still need to understand what is going on with the edge. A Sharpie and a loupe are essential. You have to know how to raise a burr on both sides of the edge for the entire length of the edge and you have to know how to properly remove it without dulling the edge. Once you have that skill/understanding down, any system will sharpen your knives.

kudos to twindog for mentioning the sharpie. in any system you need to know if you are getting full contact on a bevel. the sharpie is the easiest way i've found to confirm bevel contact. licquer thinner, methyl ethyl ketone, any of the strong solvents remove the ink easiley. do'nt get solvents on you knife handles. in prolonged sessions trying for mirror bevels, i periodically wipe my blades with solvents.

I have watched a few videos on the Wicked Edge and its seem it can keep a precise bevel easier than the Edge Pro but it does looks slightly dangerous using it. Can you hit your hand on the blade very easily when sharpening. Also, it looks like it is a must to mount it down. I have a wide range of blades from Machetes to small Mini Grips. In addition to a few recurves does the WE cover the gamete?

You guys suck! Been trying to decide between an EP or WE and this thread pushed me over the fence. Just ordered the Wicked Edge. Oh well, it's only money!

Yes, you could get cut if you brush your hand against the mounted knife. I wouldn't say it's easy to do, but I have done it.

The mount is critical. Some people balk at the optional marble base, but it's perfect. You can create a base of your own, but you're not likely to do better than the factory base.

I'd much prefer the EdgePro for a machete -- if you really need a fine edge on a machete. The Wicked Edge, to me, is best for EDC blades or kitchen blades.

I think this is actually a very split decision. Seems like the EP can handle a larger variety of Blades compared to the WE. I am leaning towards the EP at the moment but the WE has my attention.

That's exactly how I feel.

Since you work on one side at the time on the EP, do you have problems with always battleing burrs?

crimson once you progress to the polishing tapes on the edge pro the burrs are removed as you progress. one thing when starting on tapes, always make the 1st light strokes towards yourself. some times a slight burr will cut a tape if you start by going forward 1st on the polishing tapes.

Or one stroke straight down along the edge. :D

Just for the record I use polish tape using the Wicked Edge. I just use a set of worn out stones and place the tape. I think you can do just about anything with the WE as the EP
