Wicked Edge Knife Sharpener

How do you guys like the leather strop hones that are available to use with this machine?

Do you keep the same angle when using the leather hones?

I like the hones just fine. They do a good job and they do continue at the same angle, but beyond that, they can be used to maintain a convex edge according to Clay and so I must find out from him how to do that. I saw an explanation earlier but it was not clear to me.
They do their job as does the diamond paste. BTW there are a variety of micron sizes of diamond pastes available out there, so you can vary the grits by getting extra strops and trying some of those smaller or larger micron sizes.

Cheers

OK, after reading and research, hit the button and ordered, taking advantage of the 20% off on the Wicked Edge System.

Only things I didn't get is the 14 & 19 Micron Strop Pack, the Ultra Coarse or a base, (figure I could make a base easy enough).

Does anyone see a need for the 10 and 14 Micron Strop Pack?
Is the 3.5 - 5 enough?

I can always grab them at a later date I figure, along with the extra Coarse as I got some heavy grinding to do on oddball pole axes and such.

Looking forward to it!

You have all you need to produce real world razor edges in that package. Later when the bug bites you deeper, you will probably look into yet finer and finer stones, hones and strops to produce the edge that slices through everything with no resistance. LOL! :D

I have a 1x30 belt sander & a 1x42-The Ultimate Sharpener from Chipping Away. I have a Sharpmaker with all of the rods, DMT Diafolds in all the grits, Worksharp, so you would think I would be set. I also sell knives & hunting & fishing collectibles at a Flea Market with no electricity, so on 10-31 which was the last day for 20% off, I ordered a Wicked Edge with all the stones & strops. I can't hardly wait to try that baby out as I have procrastinated for a couple of years.

Congratulations brother! You will be happier yet once you get your mitts on it.And there are further developments coming up in the form of even finer hones of the kind used by the Edge Pro but fitted for the WEPS. Keep in touch Huck61 and let me know how you progress.

Best regards :)
Leo

Thanks Leo,
I will let you know when I receive it & try it out. I'm hoping that when using it to sharpen at the Flea Market it will be quick enough. This was the only way I could sell it to my wife. She just doesn't understand my obsession with sharpeners.

Depending on the knife edge condition and the metal in the blade, it will take you little time to sharpen any knife. Also depends on how far you want to go with the sharpening.
It takes a little longer the first time you sharpen a knife on the rig, but after that, touch up takes a mere few seconds to bring the edge back up to razor sharp.
The most important thing to remember during that first sharpening, is to make sure you draw up a burr with the 100 grit stone on each side before proceeding or you will not get the fearsomely sharp edge you are looking for.
Wives are darlings for sure, but there are several things they don't get about men...their love of knives/sharpening, their love of guns, their need for big speakers as opposed to perfectly good, little, wee ones and the need to push the limits in whatever they happen to be obsessed with at the moment.
Men on the other don't understand the following about women...anything at all! :D

Cheers my friend

10-4 Leo, I believe you are right on about both men & women. I've given up trying to understand them. Since I retired & my wife is now the primary earner, I just smile & say yes dear!:p

Wise man my friend! Smile. do your duties, let them win all arguments and flatter when appropriate. This way you will be able to do things you want...occasionally!! ROTFLMAO!

I'm a little confused here. Folks have been saying that the beauty of this sharpener is that you sharpen both sides at the same time. So how the heck can you raise a burr?

You are correct, except for the first sharpening. It is necessary to draw up a burr on each side, then these 2 burrs are the basis for the new edge. You make the burrs by stroking one side of the blade several times with one coarse hone...check with a finger-nail or or cotton cue tip to see that the burr has been formed and proceed to the other side and do the same thing. Once you have established the burrs, you proceed with the use of the finer hones in the manner you have envisioned.
This is better explained in the video made by Clay on the web site or on YouTube.

All the best
Leo :)

So I'm also trying to decide between the WE and the edge pro. Which one do you guys think is the easiest to use and has the quickest learning curve?

On a E P trying to keep from scratching a blade above the cutting edge is
nerve racking E P needs a clamp. Bought a W E .

No one will argue on that one, not even the Edge Pro guys...the WEPS is the easiest and fastest to use and has the most shallow learning curve. Because the edge angle is firmly fixed and the knife super-securely clamped, all that needs to be done is to raise the burrs on each side for the first sharpening only and the movement of the hones and strops. There is a skill involved in that and it develops over time and that skill is to know when the blade has reached a point where one needs to jump up to the next grit and also if there are any hot spots that need special attention. For me I find listening carefully will tell you a lot.

Hi Gary
I love my Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener and I would never sell it.
I beg to differ with what you say and I have to think you must have had the old model, because I have generation II and:
I can get the knife set in the exact same position in the clamp at any time within seconds. And I can repeat this and the edge angle with absolute accuracy every time in seconds. BTW that clamp holds the knife rigidly tight, unlike other clamp type sharpeners I have experienced.
The WE is also made in the USA...by the way I may be wrong here but the stones used in the Edge Pro probably are not made in the USA.Having said that, I believe most of the hones used everywhere, especially with diamond abrasives, are probably made in China and that includes the WEPS stones. I may have to stand corrected on that point.
Clay has never made me wait any longer than a day for a response to my questions and has bent over backward to help me, to wit...I needed my rig by a certain date so I could take it to a visit with my son. I had paid for delivery by United States Post and Clay very kindly, without being asked, sent the WEPS by Fed Ex instead and soaked up the cost himself. He did this because he realized it would not get to me in time for the trip. Also wished me a happy 75th birthday and this was his present to me. He has given me service which is hard to find anywhere in this day and age.
My new generation WEPS will sharpen a blade up to 17 inches in length...I don't need something to sharpen swords! :D
I too, even at 75 enjoy watching the lovely lady demonstrate...she is absolutely charming.
These are also my opinions and experiences. I have no remorse about buying this sharpener at all. If you follow the work-flow you can't go wrong.

Cheers
Leo

I've no intention of making problems here, but to only correct a bit of information. I just received a WE and it is not made in the USA. Without stirring up the usual back and forth, I can only say that for myself this would have factored in my decision to buy one. It's sitting here unopened and stamped 'Made in China' on the box.
