Not a typo! Wife said I need a knife. Let’s strike while the iron is hot!

I throw a lot of cast net for fish. I throw a 10’ mullet net in the surf and sound, as well as off docks and boats. My wife wants me to get a knife (you heard that right) in case I throw my cast net over a dolphin or shark. To which I say, yes, you are correct!

Honestly though, she’s probably right - things can go wrong when throwing a 10’ net into unknown waters when it’s held fast to your wrist.

So I’m looking for something I can use for safety when throwing my net. Something I can use to cut myself free if needed. I’d also like to use it wade fishing, surf fishing, maybe canoeing. Looking for something with multi use if possible.

Requirements: 1) Fixed blade; 2) Serrated; 3) Full corrosion resistance - H2, LC200N, Magnacut, etc.

Wants: 1) Visible in case dropped; 2) Safe tip? (Let me know what you think about blunt tip vs point)

Price: Any. Can’t put a price on safety, can we?

Here’s what I’m looking at and my quick take on them:

Benchmade Undercurrent - Nice magnacut, pointy, sheath not good per some reviews (just opinions though, could be good), partial serrations, bad color if dropped in water.

Spyderco Jumpmaster - Badass, super sharp, pointy danger, wish scales were bright, could be good all rounder.

NRS - Dull per reviews. Watched a guy struggle cutting rope online. Not interested unless you know of a good one.

Ontario 6140 dive - Nice blunt tip, but barely any serrations, bright color, magnacut.

Spyderco Enuff - Small, kind of pointy. Might be the winner if it was longer.

I’m leaning toward the Jumpmaster.

Let me know your suggestions!

Thanks!

Spyderco salt series would do the trick. I think the Salt series folders would do everything you described and would be easier to throw in a pocket if needed. If you’re stuck on fixed blade I’m a fan of the Enuff. I use my Salts when fishing off the beach and they have been great.

I have a couple Salts - Dagonfly and just got a Stretch 2 XL. Actually use the stretch today while helping a neighbor dig an old boat out of a yard and got to use it on old straps and tarps. Cut really well.

I was thinking fixed for safety purposes in case I had to do something quickly and couldn’t deploy a folder.

Love the Spyderco Salts.

No doubt a fixed blade is a better option if your life is one the line or if your in a situation where you don’t have time to worry about a knife opening.

If it were me, I lean strongly towards the Jumpmaster. The yellow Enuff could work, but it’s a fairly short blade. There is an older Jumpmaster with a blunt tip, but it might be hard to track one down. There was even older Aqua Salt in yellow that’s even harder to track down.

Yeah, I saw that old Jumpmaster with the blunt tip. I might see if I can find one. Leaning toward Jumpmaster, new or old model. I think it’s a good all rounder and could easily do the job if I ever get in a bind with my net/rope. It’ll probably have a lot of use outside of the rare safety use too.

This version of the Spyderco Jumpmaster (not my pic) :

Discontinued but I think it’s still available on the secondary market. Otherwise, go for the current leaf-shaped Jumpmaster II.

I have the Jumpmaster, new version and the Enuff yellow sheepsfoot. Both are excellent. Jumpmaster has pointy, somewhat delicate tip and some belly, which I like. Enuff has no belly and thick tip. Blade is a bit shorter but probably enuff. See what I did there?

And sheath is much better on the jumpmaster

Forget any folder, in this case you want an easily accessible fixed blade. Someone already mentioned the morakniv but I know that's not nearly sexy enough with the current carte blanche you have. I'm going to suggest the crkt bear claw or the walker knife company guardian river knife.

David Mary here on BF will make you what you want and does some gnarly good serrated blades. Great maker to work with.

Beat me to it......
I was gonna suggest Customs. Many of us could give ya what you Want.....
DM does some MC.
I've got batches of Cruwear and Nitro V/AEB-L
But David does a nice Large scalloped edge. If I Had to go serrated, I ask him.

*Note, some steels are Toothy, like D2, that's like a very fine serrations.....cut, and rip like a Monster! Don't necessarily Need serrated, if you don't want
