Wild Mushrooms !

That sucks, and is the reason I'll never eat a mushroom in the wild. I have those shrooms or ones that look just like it, growing in my back yard. Its amazing how my dog will eat and chew on every bade of grass or weed but hasn't messed with those lil guys.

i agree on the mushrooms, i don't touch them in the woods. too many varieties that look to similar to eachother for me to feel safe even if i studied them for years...

just not a good idea in my opinion.

Immature toxic mushrooms can look like mature edible mushrooms. You must know your stuff and limit yourself to a few you absolutely know for sure are good.

I guess I"m lucky - I don't like mushrooms except as a fire making adjunct. I could never understand eating anything that's related to Athlete's Foot and Crotch Rot!:barf:

To each their own, of course. :)

Mushrooms are like any other plant or animal you have to know what you are looking at.

I have eaten Morels all my life with no ill effects, (well no visable one's at least).

Check out the Great Morel if you have any questions about them. There are also many other great tasting mushrooms out there.

In a survival/wildcrafting situation the food value from fungi is almost never worth the chance you may make a mistake.

The ones under cow turds are safe

When I close my eyes I see stick figures pursusing each other thru an infinite limbo.

Mental note; stop closing eyes.

I eat several versions of puffballs all the time. There are a few mushrooms that really cannot be mistaken for anything dangerous. Saying that, it is true though, they do contain minerals but have very little nutritional value. Even known "safe" mushrooms can cause some people trouble. It has also been reported that some mushrooms safe to eat in some regions are actually poisonous in other regions. Since they have such insignificant nutritional value it might not be worth the risk in a survival situation. I admit I do add them to food when I find the ones that I can't mistake. They taste great and add a real moral boost.

Smart ass! :D

Although technically I said eating, not drinking! :D

LOL! how bout the bread your PBJ is on, what's in that! :foot: :D
I luv shroons, they are flavor enhancers and make things taste better but what I don't understand is all my life I've heard how dangerous wild mushrooms can be (even being a city boy) and how this poor older lady did such a thing...

omg Kr1 I remember metal detecting and "kicking" one of them puffballs/skulls and later learning they are delicious! and like you said no other mushroom is like them.

I pick and eat a lot of mushrooms, but I agree, one needs to be 100% sure what they are before eating. I don't really consider them as outdoors kinda food though (like berries and such), since mushrooms are at their best in a sauce or fried with plenty of butter... IMHO too much cooking for the woods.

Morels are the only ones that are easy to identify and dont have any poisonous look-a-likes, thus the only one I pick. If you have an area where they grow sparsely in your yard like i do, you can stimulate their growth by burning piles of brush there. Mine came back 10 fold after a little fire action.--KV

Ive been eating wild mushrooms all my life. My advice is to not pick any mushrooms. Leave them for me.

Oyster mushrooms will be out this fall. You can pay 50 a pound at the grocery store or pick 20 pounds in the wild. Man, they are good fried.

Butter is great but camping I use olive oil. Works good and tastes pretty good also. In a pinch the grease from cooking pepperoni or a steak can work also.

Yes they are. I look forward to them......

I'm not a mycophobe I'm a mycophile;)

I'm not afraid of eating mushrooms I pick and do it all the time.

With this caveat:

When I am backpacking I only eat the ones I know for sure and have eaten many times.

I would never eat a mushroom I have even positively identified that I had not eaten before way away from the car and civilization.

Reason being it is possible to be allergic to even edible mushrooms.

When I'm eating fungi for the first time I do it at home and only eat a small amount to test if I have any allergy.

But as far as avoiding all eating of mushrooms in the woods might as well not eat any plants either cause it's just as easy to get those messed up.
