Pitdog it is a good start ad a brush guard and some fenders to deflect the mud.
I have to say the Swiss Army Bike is sweet the generator light is a great adition.
I have a heav duty bike I use mostly on our rail trail and the light really helps on the tunnels on is 1/2 mile long and turns and is pitch black.

make it singlespeed. If you brake something in the woods its easier to fix,and with less parts, there is less to brake. I have a singlespeed that is my trail bike and it is stuper simple in every way.

That is what I would do.

I have an old 1994 Cannondale Killer V that I made into a SS. I got a new shock from Cannondale with a lockout so it can become fully rigid with the flip of a lever.

Plus riding a SS makes you mad strong and greatly improves your balance.
