I want to find a book that will teach me all the skills that Mr. Olson on Little House on the Prairie would have had. Basically I'm looking for something that will go over everything from tanning a hide to making candles. I'm looking for something that covers more long term sustainment than short term survival. What would you guys recommend?

Holy crap the FoxFire series is extensive. Not to mention random.

The Foxfire Book: Hog Dressing, Log Cabin Building, Mountain Crafts and Foods, Planting by the Signs, Snake Lore, Hunting Tales, Faith Healing, Moonshining

In my opinion there is no one book that will teach you everything. But a couple of good books to look into are prairie wolf book that doc covered. Larry Dean Olson has a pretty good book. I also enjoyed reading all of Tom Brown Jr's field guides.

This (the first one) is one excellent book, although it won't cover everything you want.

Doc

+1 on the McPherson's - it's considered the Bible in a lot of circles. It's concerned with primitive living rather than Little House on the Prairie-style homesteading. Neolithic skills rather than late 19th century skills.

I like the Macphersons as well, but I just ordered this one last night, my cousin had it and it covers a bit of everything, more like homestead oof the grid kind of stuff.
