A couple of days ago a thread with the title "CV Steel In Folders. WHY?" was put up and in it there was a lot of discussion about how different steels rust. Carbon Steel was a big candidate for rust and one of the steels discussed was 1095.

Well, it's raining here in Northeast CA today (supposed to snow tonight) so I decided to take my brand spanking new GEC Northfield Whittler with Smooth Banana Bone handles and 1095 steel out and put it in a shallow puddle and let it get good and wet.

This knife is brand new out of the wrapper. Never used, never oiled, never polished -- just new out of the tube and wrapper and placed on the ground in the rain.

NOW!!! Let's see what happens!! And yes, THIS IS KNIFE ABUSE

I'll post pictures after this rain and wet soak test. Who knows. If it doesn't get too rusty, maybe I'll throw it in a bucket of water for a week or so.

Naval Jelly rust remover test may follow.

If this were a child being abused we would send in CPS to remove them and their siblings from the household. Does BF.com have a BPS (Blade Protective Services) unit? If so, dibs on the sibling GECs taken away from this household! :D

Remember that most, if not all knives come from the factory with atleast a minimal amount of oil on it, thus creating a possible barrier for the water, and lessening the chance for rust to appear. That said, rust WILL form on any steel with carbon in it. Given enough time, even higher-end stainless steels like cpm154, s30v, etc, will corrode. So far, from what little i know about steels and metallurgy, the only steels showing a higher degree of corrosion-resistance are the ones where nitrogen is present. (Nitrogen increases hardenability, lessening the need for carbon, which in itsself means less corrosion.)

Sorry for the wall of text.

I am aware that the knife comes from GEC with some oil on it. However, I did not oil it in any way. Just took it out of the wrapper and placed it on the ground. We'll see what happens.

what got you all worked up about steel rusting? The GEC will rust eventually, even stainless can pit and rust, so i dont know what the point of this test is???
To each his own, seems like a waste to me though.

p.s. probably came oiled or whatever they use for the final buff on the blades (wax/polish/rouge) dunno but my cv's developed patina differently depending on what part of the blades saw the heaviest use initially

This is the traditional forum.
We DON'T:
 pound knives into car doors
 baton them through 2x4's
 see how far we can bend over a blade till it snaps
 soak them in all matter of dubious liquids to see what happens.

We let other subforums do all that nonsense so we can laugh at them.
Go pick up your knife out of the rain, dry it off, oil the joints and we'll forget you ever mentioned any of this.

The man owns the knife. He bought it. He paid for it. He can do with it what he wants!

Just keep your eye out in case you see this knife as a "1K post giveaway" sometime in the future!!! :D ......... but I think I'd still take it! ;)

LMAO! Gotta love those "bullet points."

LOL ....... now, that's good!

p.s. Love your signature pic ..... Jayne Mansfield & Sophia Loren???

Mine came with too much oil on it.
Any high carbon steel will rust if not cared for properly.
Why try to destroy a nice knife?

For the love of Pete!

Pick it up off the ground, wipe it off on your jeans and wittle something. Then post results.
