Just got back fron my trip to the appalachian and i need my RC-5 and Izula resharpend. i beat them bolth up beond my sharpening skills. Dose Rat offer a sharpening service?

Not to sound like a jerk, but I can't imagine going without my blades for 7 to 10 days or better just for a service I could do for myself.

If you don't feel your sharpening skills are up to par, there are some great videos online that show you tips and tricks.

If you have no intrest in doing it yourself, look up a member here named Richard_j.

He can put an edge on a knife like you've never seen, polished to perfection and atom splitting sharp, and for some demented reason, he does it for free. Really good guy.

But I still reccommend trying to get profecient at it yourself.

A Lansky system (or Lansky type) system is pretty much fool proof. The Spyderco Sharpmaker is another one that is excellent, but requires a bit more proficiency but is still very easy.

I would recommend getting one of those and then you never have to send your Rats away.

Just a heads up, I believe Richard_J's sharpening service is free for Military and Law Enforcement, but there may be a charge for those who aren't currently serving. I may be wrong, though. I've also heard good things about Siguy's sharpening skills.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

THAT is funny. And O' so true.

Thank you for correcting me, I think you might be right.

I also have heard good things about Siguy, but have never used his services.

It's not that i don't want to lean how to sharpen knifes. I've been trying my hardest but i don't wan't to mess up my Rats if you know what i mean. I've been practiseing on an old k-bar i have. And am not that good yet

I think Richard will sharpen for free for anybody in any Save and Serve profession. Law enforcement, Fire/Rescue, EMS, and military.

What are you (trying) to use to sharpen your knives my friend? Let us know your tools and method so we can help. You might not need to buy anything and learning to sharpen freehand is vital in the field and after a while you will convex it naturally. For right now grind away at that kbar but use the sharpie trick and cover the entire edge. This way you will know where you are going wrong on your bevel. Taught knife skills and sharpening for years in the slaughterhouse and am happy to try and help you.
regards
Brad

I just bought a Lansky sharpening kit it has 3 stones with it 120grit 280 and 600. it has a blade holder with 30,25,20, and 17 degree angels on it.

That's a good system. I think with a bit of practice, you'll be putting on a really good edge.

The Lansky is a pretty good system for diy. I've used it and once you get the hang of it it takes no time at all.

I don't think you could mess them up beyond fixing (at least not unless you are trying to!)

RAT Cutlery and Rowen Manufacturing do not offer a sharpening service. I spoke with Shon Rowen about setting something up but there is just no way he can make money doing it and more important they are not set up to handle this type of service so the risk of losing track of one knife would be high. I get a half a dozen calls a month about this and I usually try to get folks to look in the yellow pages and find someone locally or find a sharpening service here on Blade Forums. This is something most folks can learn to do with a very small amount of practice and yield a serviceable edge. Jeff and I have been known to use a piece of concrete and some water in small villages in the Amazon to get a perfectly good, serviceable edge. So with a good sysetm like Lnasky or Spderco Sharpmaker you can do a pretty professional edge. Mike

The Lanksy is as simple as it gets. There is almost no possible way of messing it up that bad. Just take your time, and you should be fine :)

Hi everyone, I'm sorry to intrude & ask this question, but I have the same problem and need help, I can't sharpen free hand that well. Smaller blades (1-2 inch) I can do, but the longer blades are different. I can’t get them razor sharp and I create a bevel, which I can feel with my nail. Please can you explain when Brad "the butcher" said "but use the sharpie trick and cover the entire edge”, what is the "sharpie trick"? Thank you, I appreciate any help &/or advise.

If you cover the angled edge of the knife with some black sharpie then attempt to sharpen the edge, you can see where your removing material and adjust the angle at which you hold the knife accordingly.

If you take a swipe and none of the sharpie mark disappears, you need to adjust.
