I was in awe when I arrived in the USA 15 years ago to find that one could purchase a knife at virtually any Super Market, General Dealer or Hardware Store. My fixation at that time was on the Winchester range of knives carried by a Super Market. Every Christmas they would have new model out. I did buy one or two that appealed to me and what the budget would allow.

Here is one that I found the other day. Thought I would share. Anyone else have any Winchesters to display ?

The truth is that Winchester knives are pretty crappy.:barf:

Anybody who carries a winchester knife is most likely a rookie knife guy.

^^^^^ That was super not cool.

To the OP. If you like them, they are great for you. I'm glad you have many that you enjoy. Congratulations on finding a hobby, and knives you enjoy.

I was really trying to find a nice way to put exactly this. I got a good chuckle out of it, so thanks for that. LOL

You could get good knives in the same price range that a Winchester knife would cost. I'm guessing the knife in the picture that OP posted costed maybe 10 or 15 dollars, with that ammount of money there are a few other choices of low priced/good knives, the first one that comes to mind is the Old Hickory butcher knife, guaranteed it will last much more longer than any Winchester knife on earth.

I used to have a Winchester Bowie from Wal-Mart. I was 18 so it was an impulse buy because it looked cool. It was my first fixed blade, the gold paint on the guard came off in no time, it was too heavy for anything but chopping, and the steel was too soft. It just wouldn't hold an edge. BUT, it was all I could afford and I loved it. If a knife does what you want it to and you enjoy carrying it then give it the love it deserves and use it. I have a $7 Snap-On knife on my keychain everyday that was made in china and is complete crap. But that just means I always have a knife on me that can do the really gritty work (like prying the hardened PCV grommets off of my valve cover). That knife looks great man, enjoy them all. Buy more knives, buy better knives, but enjoy every one of them. And if you find one you can't enjoy, give it away. Someone will love it.

Some of the very first knives I ever owned were Winchester, and I still have them. Are they Sebenza quality? Absolutely not, would I sell my Sebenzas before I sold my Winchesters? You bet. Funny how that works. I got this Winchester as a graduation present about 10yrs ago. I will hang on to this knife forever.

the winchester bowies are welded at the tang and some have what looks like a full tang but it is truly a welded tang, very dangerous if it snaps in half and your fingers or wrist are in the wrong place at wrong time.

"Hello Kettle?".... "This is Pot"

Really, your favorites aren't top tier status. So....

OP.... we all started somewhere. Stick around and enjoy reading the millions of threads here.

I never said my favorites are "top tier status", I don't spend 400 dollars on a folding knife and take photos of it all day, I buy knives that I could afford and I use my knives instead of treating them as jewelry or a status symbol.

There is a difference between 'low priced/quality knives' and 'cheap/crappy knives'. Winchester is a cheap crappy knife.

Yea the thing was terrible. I came to hate it but back before I knew about steel, tangs, and grinds a knife was a knife. I know better now because from ages 19-23 I read bladeforums. Would I buy one now? No. But I did enjoy it then, and in hindsight, thats worth twenty bucks. My wife has a little winchester slip-joint I'll post a picture of later. She has affectionately named it "Winston". I didn't know about the welded tang on the bowie's though.....thats pretty crummy....

Dad gave me a Winchester pocket knife like that Seneca. He gave me a Case Mini Trapper a few years later so I gave it to my brother but that thing took a beating. Memories:)

Ever think the OP can only afford a Winchester?

And I don't carry a status symbol either. Just common production Spyderco, or ZT, or my one Benchmade.

But your first post in this thread was seriously condescending and un-cool.

I have a winchester that had nominal sentimental value. I don't know where it's at now. Truth is, people look just a little bit too far into knives. Yeah, I'm one of those. People have been using knives less than what we would consider good since the dawn of time. If the dude likes to collect winchester knives, that's cool. It probably means something to him coming to a more or less free country and that was the first knife brand that stuck out to him. Yes, there are better knives out there for the money and way better knives in general, but that doesn't mean anything when sentiment comes into play.

Being that Winchester doesn't actually manufacture knives, any knife bearing their logo can probably be found being sold under a different brand name for less money. I have a Guidesman folding knife that sold for $8 any day of the week, then was marked down to $4 and then $2, while the exact same knife with a Winchester logo was well over $20. A fixed blade version of the OP's knife, with some sort of G10 or FRN scales, is available from Camillus. Some of the Winchester knives sold online are supposedly made overseas by Gerber . . . which isn't much of a selling point. But you like what you like, and if it does the job, so be it.

The aforementioned Guidesman (bought for $2) probably has more miles on it than any other knife I own. Other than needing sharpening more often than others, it has been flawless, which is more than I can say about a number of other more expensive knives I've bought since then.

Here's a bowie my dad got me for christmas a few years back. A friend of ours put the stag handle on. At this point the pinnacle of my collection was a buck 110, so it was the bees knees as far as I knew. Some time and many knives later I still have it, as was mentioned before it would be one of the last ones I'd get rid of. There's just too much sentimental value there, and somewhat marks the beginning of my knife fetish.

Fixed. I concur. When I joined the forums I was a SOG fanboi. $100 was a lot to spend on a knife. 18 month's later, I've owned knives that cost more than some of my guns. I've downsized a lot, and now have just 10 folders. 9 production, 1 custom.

This sums up my opinion. I have the exact Winchester pictured at home. I'll post a pic later of I remember. The fact is it can do anything all my other knives do. Sometimes I think us knife nuts forget how great ANY on Feb was when we first caught the bug. I try to ALWAYS keep that spirit with me. If I can't for a certain knife I'd NEVER act all stuck up or kno-it-all-y and tell someone their knife is cheap. If I did I'd be saying that to EVERYONE who shows me their knife that I know.

At the end of the day, I'd rather be the one with a crappy knife than the one with a crappy personality.
