Winchester Fixed Blades

4 or 5 years ago my dad bought a couple of Winchester hunting knives for me & my sister. They appear to be full tang - no obvious signs of weldings, and the handle is just wooden scales on the sides, like any other full tang knife. I haven't really put it to hard use, but it has held up well to light duty around the house and occasional camping. I've got better fixed blades now, but the Winchester was my first, and it has immense sentimental value.

It seems most think of their taste in knives as the foremost authority as to what everyone else should live or post up to,... and fail to see this as a hobby of interest to folks from all walks of life, with all different interests in knives and blades. I've had 400 dollar knives and fourteen dollar knives, I've sold off all of my most expensive knives for fear of scratching or breaking them trashing an investment. I now will only buy knives under the 100 dollar range, and there are plenty of quality blades in that price range. So their are different qualities of knives just as there are with everything else in life, funny when a pretty boy steel snob post's up insults about someone else's taste or preferences in knives, sit's around eye f**king his expensive knives and never uses them.:jerkit An old saying goes something like this "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." Because it makes you look like an a$$hole.;)

I think everything that guy has said has completely backfired on him. He would have been fine had he just said " ah, my bad, i wasn't trying to be offensive. I didn't think about the dude just strolling through memory lane. I was just commenting on the quality I've seen in winchester knives and wanted to warn new people who may not know."

We'll see if he comes around. Unfortunately, what could have been a fun and helpful conversation has been turned into something else.

I hope a moderator steps in, give the op a nice new clean thread to talk about what he or she wanted to talk about and send this whole thing to the trash bin.

I was in awe when I arrived in the USA 15 years ago to find that one could purchase a knife at virtually any Super Market, General Dealer or Hardware Store. My fixation at that time was on the Winchester range of knives carried by a Super Market. Every Christmas they would have new model out. I did buy one or two that appealed to me and what the budget would allow.

Here is one that I found the other day. Thought I would share. Anyone else have any Winchesters to display ?

Ignore woodcamo. he likes to make asanine comments in every thread.

To be honest man, im really into high quality knifes. but a blade is a blade. if it cuts, then whats the problem?

Is that picture actually a fixed blade? it looks like a folder!

Nah, I'm not offended by your opinion about the lack of reliability in particular knife brands. I'm annoyed that you felt the need to be a pretentious prick about the fact that Winchester knives are low quality knives. Yeah, they are. So what? The OP bought a knife that appealed to him at the time and was taking a trip down memory lane and wanted to share it with everyone. The way you approached it was messed up. Now you're calling the gentlemen in this thread pussies, further lowering my and I'm assuming a lot of other people's opinion of you, not that you care. Why are you so upset about what someone else carried at a different time in their life? I carried a $12 S&W tanto/serrated linerlock in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I loved that knife and thought it was totally cool. It was to me then and I'd be pretty hurt if I tried to show off that knife and talk about the memories attached to it and the first response in the thread was to crap on my parade. THAT is what we "pussies" are offended by.

It reminds me of guys that ride Harley's 20 days a year looking down on me riding a Honda Shadow 250 days a year. Honda<Harley and Harley automatically makes you a "real motorcycle guy?" See the parallels?

Ride your ride. Carry your carry. Who cares man?

Youre a stand up man. Thank you for hooking this man up. I was actually about to pm him and offerr him a free knife, but youve got him covered.

I applaud you. I wish more people on this forum werent assholes.

For a really long time my best knives were Winchester knives from Walmart and my uncle used to give me one every birthday. My dad still loves the little Winchester drop point fixed blades. I don't think there's a design on the planet that fits his hand better. We've dressed/boned a couple dozen deer with those knives. Some would require two knives to finish a deer, others were still sharp after we finished one. But they all got the job done, and we could afford to have several to swap out during the work. I've got a little Winchester folder like the one posted by Seneca? that got me out of a bind one time. I used the back of the blade to short out the starter on my ATV when I couldn't get it started out in the woods one day. I may see if I can find it......

Hi Stonproject. It is a fixed blade.

I do have some Winchesters but no pics of them, I'm sorry. I don't personally carry these knives but they were gifts from people who knew I liked knives, so they aren't going anywhere, regardless of what I think of them as a brand. That's just me.

While I wouldn't have rained on your parade as heavily as some in the thread have done, I do agree they are lower quality and better quality can be had for not much or in some cases the same amount of money. It's unfortunate that people just assumed you would know that already, however.

I don't know from where you hail originally, but I bet it must have been cool to see you could pick up knives like this in most retail outlets, if you were not previously able to do so. That must have been something.

My bad, I just remembered you said you had a choice of Assegai knives where you are from, so I am guessing South Africa.

Moved from Cape Town after winning the "Green Card Lottery"

Favorite knife is a Frost Cutlery Coon Skinner.

Congrats on winning man. My girlfriend tried, but no luck.

I'm sure I'll giveaway some knives soon, be on the lookout.

As I mentioned in my original post, this was when I first moved to the USA. Believe me the Winchester was a major step up from the original Assegai - LOL. Since joining "BladeForums" I have learned a lot. It is amazing how many quality and custom knives are out there. As I am not the great white hunter I am still looking and learning as to what quality blade I would like to buy.

Your opening post has one of the best knife photos that I have seen in a while; very nice. As for the knife, what matters is that it works for you. You can certainly buy a more expensive, better quality and a more elaborate knives, but it is still just a piece of steel and we often forget that the vast majority of the world accomplishes a lot of work with very basic knives.

See, this is where the English language is way off. Think about what a vagina can do. Childbirth, intercourse, all sorts of stretching, etc. Never phases it. Ever get tapped ever so gently in the wrong place on your testicles? Instant, down for the count pain. So we should really call weak men testicles.....or nuts.......

Hal Sparks agrees with you. :)

Your posts and offer of a knife for the OP has taken what started out as a nice thread that turned extremely ugly out of the blue, thanks to one rude person, and turned it back into a very pleasant thread to read.:thumbup:

I carried a S&W frame lock for a year or more before I got a Mini Grip. It cut stuff just fine during that time and I still have it here in my box o' knives.

Yeah, well I love South Africans. My best friend in Kuwait was from SA and I loved learning Affrikaans, not that I remember any of it. I still play Sarie Marais often and remember that time in my life. That, and I hate dickheads. That's all. :)

My dad has carried a "crappy" USA Schrade SP-3 for the past 30+ years. It's a $12 knife and totally below most people on this forum. My parents farm and I'll bet you that knife has seen more hard use than 95% of the ZTs on this forum.

I don't doubt that one bit! I come from farm stock and if ANY knife sees more hard use than a farmers I'd be hard pressed to pick whose it could be. My Grandpa had a Schrade stockman 3 blade, carbon steel, the "old school" kind, and he could get a shaving edge on that thing. It did everything from castrate hogs to whittle to cut watermelon to gut rabbits and squirrels. I wish i knew what happened to it.

Welcome KG4ULR. I don't baton with my knives, so I have no doubt that any of the Winchester knives would work fine for my needs. Edge retention would be my only concern, but that could easily be remedied by carrying a sharpener. I'm sure they are perfectly capable of whittling wood and preparing food during a weekend of backpacking. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to buy this knife. If only it had a little better steel. Other than that, it's a great looking knife.

I would never buy a knife from a faggot that acts so delicate and offended at someone else's opinion on winchester knives.......stop pretending you are a big time knife dealer.:D

Comments like this from you or anyone else will not be tolerated. Next time you get bounced out of here.

We tried every year for 4 years. Tell her not to give up. She can do everything herself, so no need for any lawyers. Got our citizenship and my daughters citizenship with no lawyers. All the info is on the net.
