Winkler Knives II Breaching/Combat Axe

Doug,
My Sayoc RnD is 5160. Dan Winkler gave me the option, even said I could wait a while and get it in H13. I wanted to go with the 5160 for it's edge retention, because the Sayoc is a weapon, not a breaching tool.
As a side note, my GG&G Battlehawk is S7, and that is some tough steel. At 3/8" thick, and with it's thick edge, the GG&G BH can take on concrete and sheet steel with not much edge damage, if any. I'm just saying I already had a breacher in S7, so a fighter in 5160 made sense.

The rear spike looks like it is the full 3/8" thick, and the front edge does have a grind, but it looks like the fatest edge I've ever seen from Dan. I could be wrong, I only own one Winkler, Sayoc RnD, and can only judge this one and the others based on pics.

Foxx,
Dan made very few convex grind on his axes and this is one of it. It's a Breaching first combat second type of tool.
I might have to test my Horton S7 to compare. But then it will be a chopper vs axe.

I won't go for H13 if i opt for Sayoc. Most likely 5160. The tapering just made the axe darn scary on the receiving end.
Take account this breaching axe isn't light (solid tang w/o holes fr weight reduction) and certainly built for major destruction.

I think I know what you mean. The GG&G BH weights 44oz, and it really packs a punch. It doesn't chop wood, it just breaks it. I have some old fence posts that I "spar". I've yet to chop one in half, but I've broken about 3 so far. I've worked over a steel chair with it as well, just the weight alone makes holes.

foxx,

Thanks for the quick reply, I just got back.
I have one of Dan's Sayoc RnD's in 5160 and curly maple.
As Ed already mentioned, hard use tools.
Congrats again !

Doug

The hardest wait of all just started...I just received word from Mr. Winkler that my Combat Axe is finally ready, and I just got off the phone to pay for it. Now Uncle Sugar's Pony Express needs to bring my new axe!
