WINNER ANNOUNCED! That's a thousand with three zeroes?!? (Traditional knife GAW)

I toss in my 2016 Knife of the year. This is the one that rattles around in my pocket and feels the most friendly. It's a Schrade NY U.S.A. 233. The bone is nice and smooth but still grips well, the blades have an interesting patina now that I've spent several years chopping up apples, raw chicken and several other varieties of fruits and vegetables on scouting trips. I'm not sure when it was made but Mr. Williams put it together in 2009. I always wanted to have one of his creations and when I saw it offered --- It was mine. The two pictures were taken when it was new and now it shows the pocket worn character that goes with the territory. So here's my entry and congratulations on 1000

Some fantastic contenders for Knife of 2016, everybody, and thank you all for the kind words!

I know a few modern folders have been posted in the thread; normally I wouldn't bat an eyelash because I'm almost always carrying one in addition to my trads, but in respect to the mods and the rules of the forum we'll want to limit the entries to traditionals. We want as little attention from the Mod Party Van as possible here on the porch. :p

Pics to follow if I can master uploading from a phone.

I know there's a bit of a "stock post" that pops up from time to time in the Trads forum regarding how to leverage free services (like Photobucket, Flickr, etc.) and their built-in BBCode "copy/paste" sections to easily post. It's how I do it; bear in mind that I use the web interface for both BF and the photo service, so those of you who use them in app format might not have the same options available (thought I'm sure it can be done, maybe just not as easily). The long and short of it is if you can get your hands on a direct link to the photo ("http://blahblah.com/photo.jpg"), you can use the Insert Image icon above the Reply text box (third from the right over Quick Reply, fourth from the right in the second row atop the full "Advanced" editor) to show the photo in your post. Just paste the full "http://blahblah.com/photo.jpg" URL into the box that pops up. Both iPhones/iPads and Android devices should be able to handle this if you use a built-in browser like Chrome or Safari in lieu of the apps, though I understand Photobucket (which I don't use -- it's down way too much) might have that functionality built into its app already. If you're using a browser, you should be able to do this in your existing entry post using the 'Edit Post' option to double your chances. :D

... there's a Case Master Dealer set up at a local pharmacy here in Atlanta where I can score Sodbusters and Jr.s all day long for twenty bucks a pop.

Between this and Atiger's Barlows I'm really starting to miss the ATL.

Beautiful knives, folks, keep 'em comin'!

My knife of the year is my Imperial Ranger stockman it was covered in paint yet the blades and knife were in almost new condition even though it almost 40 years old .

It the top knife.

I would love to have a large Case Stockman, i had one for a very short time and got rid of it and have regretted it ever since. Here's my most carried and favorite knife for 2016. It's a #71 Bull Nose black delrin. This little knife is just about perfect, the handle is pleasingly smooth, the blade is thin and sharp and it's made very well and snappy! Oh and the patina is all natural, no potatoes here.

Congrats on your 1000th post Tsar, and a great GAW! I was going to say not an entry, but I have a hard time resisting a stockman, and I haven't tried a large on yet, so I'd love a chance!

Most of the time, a stockman pattern wins the morning draw and ends up in my pocket. By far, my favorite one, and the one that sees the most pocket time is my chestnut sowbelly. This is probably my favorite knife I own, and easily my knife of 2016 :)

Cheers!

Tsar, as always I love that Case, whenever i see one I think of you using it EVERY day. To make my endearment for your GAW more intricate, my KotY isn't one knife or even a style, it's a brand.

Case knives, of which i have owned four, have become quite respected in my eyes this year.
My first two Cases were both lacking, the stockman with mushy mushroom snap and blade rubbing, and a beat to there and back soddie with dangerous vertical play.
I admit, I carried my Case Stockman less in the first three years of owning it than I have in the past month. Yet, I'm now hooked. The sowbelly i traded for is also awesome, especially after I made a sheepsfoot for it.

Pictures, pictures

Thanks for this great GAW buddy, it's always good to see you on the porch.

I picked up a TL-29 on eBay for like $5.50 with $2 shipping. I figured that I'd just grab it to practice rehandling and modifying, but when I got it in my hand and sharpened it up, I fell in love with the design! I love the shape of the blade, the steel took a literal shaving edge, and after I finish modding it (cocobolo handles, taking out the electrician blade, I might try bolsters too) I have a feeling that it's going to find a long lasting home in my pocket.

Isn't it a bit early to pick a Knife of 2016? I've been carrying this knife recently ever since I got it in the mail. It's a GEC #73.

First, I'd like to thank everybody who contributed to the thread and spent a little time talking, showing, and otherwise waxing poetic about the knives that are in contention for KotY, or Knife of 2016. My inspiration was the old Knife of 2015 threat which many of our most valued regulars took part in, and I look forward to the 2016 edition when we're ready to put another year in the books.

I enjoyed all your photos, your anecdotes, and the background behind your favorite carries immensely. You guys are what makes our little porch the best place on the internet. I'll admit I was a little nervous when the first five responses were all "not an entry" posts. :o I was beginning to think I had misjudged the interest in what I consider one of Case's finest production knives and one of the classic patterns representing traditional pocket knives as a whole. From the number of entries in the end, however (and the number of little slips of index cards I had to carve up with my big Barlow ), it seems like at least a few of you were legitimately excited about the prospect of trying out one of Case's most notable patterns in what I consider to be their best steel (barring those CPM-154 short runs that I'm sure I'll never see part of my collection... :p).

So, without any further ado, to the drawing! Every entrant was given a single slip of "paper" (really, card stock) and those who included a photo of their KotY candidates received a second card. All the slips were then dumped unceremoniously into my comically-large hat, and I made extra sure that it was "all shook up" so that the slips were about as randomized as physics would allow...

The winner of the Case 6375 CV stockman... traumkommode!

Congratulations! An email requesting your shipping information will be forthcoming shortly!

(Maybe he'll return the favor by brokering the procurement of a couple of those cheap sodbusters. :D :D :D)

Since I'd spent so much time carving up cards and writing down names and post numbers, the selection of a winner seemed a little anticlimactic to me. So I rummaged around a little bit in my drawers until I stumbled across an example of another pattern that is near and dear to my heart, but one that is probably the polar opposite of the large stockman. At 3" long, it might not be the smallest pattern Case makes, but the slenderness of the single California clip construction and the simple, traditional lines of the frame make this knife one of the lightest and most pocketable Cases of all...

The (in)famous watch pocket wonder, the Case 610096 tiny toothpick! This example, a 2007 model in tangerine jigged bone, has also sat pretty much untouched in lieu of the other toothpicks I selected when supplementing my carries. It absolutely vanishes in any pocket (seriously, I find myself checking from time to time to make sure it's still there :o) and the slim stainless clip is a wicked slicer suitable for the most in-close, detailed work.

So, with traumkommode's entry cards taken out of the hat, I returned to the remaining pile and mixed 'em up good. I grabbed the hat, shook it all around, even did a hokey pokey or two for good measure...

(Ok, I didn't do the hokey pokey.)

One last shake of the hat and a squeeze of the eyelids, and I was blindly grasping for the second lucky card. I finally managed to grab a single one. The new owner of a shiny, orange-y, toothpick-y piece of classic American cutlery is... Tyler.Bachman!

Since your email is not available to me, a visitor message requesting your shipping address will be posted shortly, Tyler. I guess we'll have to see if the 'pick can knock the 'yote out of your pocket. :D

Congratulations to both winners and thank you all again for making my first thousand so special and so much fun!
