Time for the second annual winter camping excursion over MLK weekend. The Wilderness Learning Center is currently planning a long weekend trip in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It will be cold, there will be plenty of food and of course, lots of blades to play with. We'll be teaching some skills as we go and the whole time we're going to have a blast. Last year, we had almost 2 dozen hearty souls come out and brave the weather. This year, we hope to have more.

E-mail me if you are interested. estela_usa@sbcglobal.net

I'll post more details in the next couple weeks. Get the time off now so there are no excuses. Time to get out and back up all the talkin' or in this case, postin'. Lets see what we can learn from each other.

I know that you're gonna post details later....but, real quick, where in the Catskills, exactly. I'm pretty familiar with the area.
- Thanks

I will be there bro. Can't wait. :D

Troop,

I'll have to let you know. We are working on one site but I don't want to jinx it by saying where just yet. If you have any good recommendations, your's might be better and we may jump on it. Thinking about coming brother?

Yup...having my knee scoped in a couple weeks; should be good to go by Jan.(hopefully)
(Well, let's see how it goes.)

Thinking about it, I have to work it out with the Warden. Gene

K- I don't know how many people you usualy have on these trips but a great place in the catskills to camp is the face of a mnt called vromans nose....you'd have to hike in your own water and it'll be cold up there but campings free and the view is ridiculous....

RescueRiley,

Where in the Catskills is this Mountain? Do you have the town it is in? Is it V Romans Nose or Romans Nose? We could hike it in, that isn't a problem. Usually, our first winter trip is a car camping trip to gently indoctrinate those not familiar with winter camping. Our winter weeklong course is a bit different. Also, trips later in the season are snowshoe in and snowshoe out.

Looks like close to a dozen are going or at least saying they will be there for this one. Would love to see more show. Just let me know and I'll give you a decent minimum requirements gear list.

Just thought I would post a few pics of my trip to the Catskills as inspiration. My advice to people who decide to go is pack fairly light as you have to climb up some cliffs which is difficult in a heavy pack. Bring lots of water. Some of the springs on the maps are dried up or not there (we ended up having to filter puddle water). Although this was the hot months of the summer.

Sorry about the negatives. I'm not trying to discourage people from going, just making people aware of what it is like. I truly love this place and recommend it to anyone. Some of the nicest views on the east coast. After hiking 18 miles to the summit, the view is awe-inspiring. Sorry I wont be able to make this trip it sounds like a blast.

These pictures are from the loop of Wittonburg (I think that is right) and Cornell mountain.

Much of the trail was like this with 10 foot climbs up rock faces

It was difficult to find a campsite unless you were right near the trail or on a summit (not allowed in summer season)

The views are beautiful. Rolling foothills for as far as the eye can see

This were wood stairs that were pretty high steps and were tiring

Locations,
I am starting to finalize a location for our winter trip. One site that looks good so far is near Bushnellsville, NY, off of Rt 42. There are no established camp sites here and no trails. From the TOPO Map it looks pretty good but I will keep looking.
Marty Simon :)

Aggie and I are going to scout a few places before christmas. We'll keep everyone posted. Right now the count is definately 13 with 4 maybes. Scott Gossman will be there with some new blades to test out. I don't think we will be able to drive to any of the sites, I am sure we will have to snowshoe in..

Only a little over a month away. I will have a new Tusker to test out that weekend. I'm working with a new steel ( new for me). It's an L6 alternative, 8670. From what I've read, it should work out well for large camp knives.

Scott, maybe I'll be going on this trip,(but I just had knee surgery last week.), and can help you put it through the paces:D. I've been real curious about L6 lately. A lot of people say that it won't hold an edge for long. I think that that is BS; I just think that you have to get to know the steel well.

Troop, hope you can make it. It's shaping up to be a great time.

Scott,
Jerry, me and Aggie are going on a scouting mission on the 19th & 20th of this month(Dec). We will decide on a final location and posy it as soon as we know.

Marty, I saw you said something about having to snowshoe in. Let me know for sure, it will give me a reason to buy a pair. :D
