Winter Hobby.....................Building AR15

Wintermute: I'm diggin that sully Stock Bro!
I've done "Tacti-cool" and quickly figured out that, for what I need, Light weight is the way to go, so, Here's a cheap lightweight thing i put together from some sweet deals i found, Magpul MOE all around, troy flip up rear (ok, that's not cheap)BCM Gunfighter charging handle. got a savvy sniper sling and the fail zero kit for christmas. the kit comes with nickel boron coated BCG and Hammer. the coated hammer actually makes for a smoother trigger pull with the stock trigger. but the headspacing was off, so i have to send the kit back. I've decided to send my old BCG and Hammer to Robar for NP3 coating.
I also have been planing a Coyote build using a VLTOR MUR upper White Oak 20" in .204 ruger with a JP enterprise handguard and trigger. and sooner or later a 50 Beowulf upper :D

Thanks. I love it. Extremely well built and solid! I'm not allowed to own a collapsible stock and I don't think I'd want one after having this thing. It wouldn't meet your lightweight criteria though - it's heavy! But at least it's weight in the rear. If you're sticking with only iron sights, I highly recommend the LMT rear sight - full functionality of the A2 rear sight (I have mine set up for Santose IBZ) and the new ones are lighter than the old ones (which were lighter than the carry handle).

I put this in another thread, but I guess it goes here too. This is my 3-gun rifle I finally finished....I think.

I'm working on another build that will be very similar for general purposes. Biggest difference will be the optic. I can't afford another $2500 piece of glass.

I have heard good things about the LMT sights. I have never tried them personally but I like what I have read about them. Probably gonna give them a try on something here soon.

SGTCap,

That is great looking 3 gun setup. 3 gun is another thing on my bucket list to get around to.

I had it for about a year and sold it. It was alright. I got mine when Marty first introduced the round to the public (before RRA started selling them). It shot well but wasn't real practical. I built it for hog hunting on Ft Stewart in Ga, but after a year of striking out every weekend I gave up on the SOCOM and hog hunting. The ammo was too expensive and hard to find for plinking and I never did get to kill a hog with it so it got sold. Honestly I would buy a Marlin SBL 45-70 before I did the SOCOM thing again. If I just had to have another big bore AR, I would go with a SOCOM again, though. It outshines all the other big calibers. If you decide to get one, keep in mind it was designed to be a short-barreled rifle. Marty designed the round to achieve full powder burn around 8.3" so even that 10.5" was longer than need be. If I was to do it again I would set it up like the suppressed 22 in the pictures above it. I would run a 8.5" barrel with a 12 or longer handgaurd and a suppressor that would fit inside the rail. That way I get the handling of a longer gun (which I like) and a suppressed sound signature(the big ammo is subsonic so it would work out well). Recoil wasn't bad either. One buddy got scope bite with it, but I'm convinced that was his fault, not the gun.

Since you mentioned it earlier, I will tell you this. I would stay away from the SCAR. It does nothing better than the AR platform, and somethings worse, for more money. My buddies in Ranger Batt. had them for less than a year before they got rid of them. The SCAR 17 in 7.62 got good reviews from them (more because of the catridge I think) but they agreed that the 5.56 version was over rated, priced and hyped junk.

No offense to the owner of one in this thread, it's just my opinion.

Here is a dumb question. "I am not sure, what does "build an AR " means ?"

1. Is it buying all the parts, IE. buy a complete upper and complete lower put them together and accessorize with scopes and grips and other doo dads ?

2. Or buy a stripped lower, a stripped upper a put it together with a parts kit add grips and doo dads

3. Buying a 80% lower and milling it to completion, the same with the upper, buying a barrel and all the little parts and putting it together.

I have done 1 and part of 2 ( I have not put a parts kit in yet) and part of 3 (but I will not mill the upper, easier to just buy one), but now sure where I would fall

An AR builder has moly grease under his finger nails an knows how to stake a key. If no moly grease is involved...just an assembler IMHO;)

Very nice rifle I am getting ready to start my first 3-gun. Looking at the Vltor and Noveske lowers. Love that scope is that the Z6i, I am between that and the S&B. Here is my latest build on a Spikes Zombie lower.

I'll play...
CIMG1318.jpg

Spikes upper, Armadynamics charging handle, DD BCG, BCM barrel, Midwest Industries rail, CMMG lower, Spikes LPK, Lancer magazines, LMT rear sight, Magpul front, Smith Vortex FH. Stag A2 stock, YHM gas block, standard rifle-length gas system. Has since received a VTAC MK2 padded sling and A2 stock sling adapter as well as a front QD swivel. Will get a flashlight soon. Someday, I'll send it to ADCO, cut it to 18" and flute it heavily. The stock will someday be replaced with an ACE SOCOM, same time I get a light for it.

The bag is a Maxpedition Gleneagle if you were wondering. I heat with wood pellets.

I have been doing a lot of research and I'm thinking real hard on building a 7.62 x 40 with Wilson barrel and upper. I really like the idea of a .30 in a standard AR.

If you want a pimp 3-gun lower look at Lancer Systems. They have an awesome lower with interchangeable magwells.

Go with the z6i if you can swing it. Really it is the best optic on the market now and for the foreseeable future.

I was looking at the Lancer lower on Raniers site but really like the new Noveske forged lower which also has the flared magwell, will have to look again.

Do you have any expirience with the Vltor monolithic uppers?

Garth love the 1911 scales but how about a Busse AR grip machined out of Busse patterned G10?

Many years ago I assembled (as I really don't think of ARs as something you actually build ;) ) the one on the left. Long gone now of course but it shot like a varmint rifle...!!!! Still, it is chambered for a varmint calibre... ;) ;) Not like the SLR... :)

I would be "All In" for a Busse AR grip. It would be pretty interesting to build, G10 could probably get too heavy very quickly. I'm sure Garth could figure it out...

Hogue has some out but I have never seen or held them so no idea of weight but they looked nice. We need to watch the pics of Garth's new build to see if he rolls out a proto grip on it.

Or how a bout a Infi AR grip knife I already have a Busse AK 47 you guys should do a Busse AR 15 that fits in the grip compartment of the new Busse AR Grip.

Here is a example of something Samson is doing to fit in the grip compartment
