Winter is coming, What are you wearing.

I bought a vintage (60's) Peacoat several years back for $50.
It's the warmest coat I've ever owned.
Plus, the wool is so dense, it totally blocks the wind.
Mine was issued to a Coast Guard sailor and it has a little white Coast Guard symbol stitched to the right cuff as a nice touch.
It must've never been worn because it looks virtually brand new.
I'll be ordering a Filson in a little bit when they put their Black Friday sales up.

Filson has black friday sales? Oh crud. I may have to break my "spend no money on black friday" rule.

Nice suit Harkamus. A little out of my league though :)

Lenny, I used to have a Navy surplus Pea Coat. While it was incredibly warm, I sold it because the arms were almost comically short.

I really like merino wool, but I usually go for bargain basement outlets for stuff. Minus 33 makes some reasonably priced items relatively speaking; I got their long johns and they are the best I've ever owned.

SIMS makes some decent snow boarding gear; I have a hoodie and snow pants from them I picked up at a sports authority clearance rack. I don't snow board, but they come with lots of zipper pockets and are well made.

I think the USMC pullover looks kinda sharp. (BTW, the sleeves are really long and have thumb holes. It also has a handwarmer kangaroo pocket on the front. It's a really practical piece of gear.)

While researching all this, I've learned that the Army gets the same grid fleece (but no kangaroo pocket) in desert sand. Navy SEALs get tweaked Patagonia gear (I think usually in "Alpha Green.") I guess the military wants their special forces to look good, too. :)

Oh yeah... Patagonia stuff is available in S, M, L, etc. The military gear comes in Small Short, Small Regular, Small Long, etc...

You know what? I'm gonna pick one up anyway. How do they fit? I wear a medium in Carhartt but a large in Under Armor. I'm going to look at a medium tall I think...
My Chest measures 46-48"

I only have Carhartt pants, and nothing from Under Armor. All I can really say is that a medium regular fits like a medium regular. :)

They do have more of an athletic cut. They're not skin tight, but certainly not baggy. They are also cut long. My wife said it fits like a tunic. Mine comes down to the bottom of my butt in the back (and it's a regular.) Given your chest size, I'm wondering if a large might fit you better.

Great suit Hark! What knife are you carrying when you wear that sharp outfit? :)

Winter is coming...

I'm wearing a bunch of TAD gear, mostly their merino lineup and some jackets (shag, stealth, ranger).

Over those ill be throwing on my dads 40 year old Schott leather jacket or found London Fog over coat :)

There's a good bit of other gear in the mix as well, some pieces from arcteryx, first ascent, sweaters from Abercrombie, and jcrew. I'm dangerously close to picking up something from acronym :D I guess I kind of have a thing for technical outer wear ;)

Twisted X full quill Ostrich slip on boots, Blue Jeans, Iraq/Afghanistan combat vet T-shirt, my pistol & Chamblin slip joint.
Feels just right in NE GA today!

I like the electric heated garments and have a Milwawkee tool M12 electric heated jacked. It runs off of the lithium battery drill packs. I keep a couple of extra drill packs charged up with me and it will heat all day with 3 heat settings, using medium most of the time. It works and looks good by itself and many times I wear it under the snowmobile suit.

I've had better luck with a couple of moderate layers than a heavy winter coat. One change the better half and I made years ago was, we swore off those darn fleece junk stuff. As I got older, and didn't like the cold more and more, I found that nothing beats a good old fashioned knit wool sweater under a coat. Real knitted wool, not the synthetic poly feece stuff that has been passed on to us as the greatest thing since sliced bread. A cable knit or fishermans knit sweater is warmer than nay of the fleece stuff we tried from some major brands. With a windproof shell over it, it's good for below freezing temps.

Same for socks, give me real wool. If you have trouble with the itching thing, then go for a good quality Merino wool or lambs wool.

This one.

Hah. Since I had the suit custom made for me, I asked for the tailor to put in bigger belt loops so that a 1.5 inch wide carry belt would fit. Suit pants usually have much smaller belt loops.

Wool: T-shirt, socks, hat, jacket, & long johns if needed. Mostly Filson, some Minus 33. If it's too cold & windy add some Filson Tin Cloth on top of the wool. I'll take -10 degrees over +90 any day. :D

Yeah, for some reason, all the vintage Pea Coats I've seen for sale are max size 44 or so.
I have a 40 and the arms are just long enough.
Guess all the guys in the military were smaller back then.

It doesn't get very cold here, rarely dips in to the teens (that's not very cold to me) and then not for long at all. But when it does drop in to the 40's or below, I wear a heavy Carhartt jacket. If it's raining I wear a Patagonia hardshell and a Mountain Hardware softshell underneath. Most of the time I just wear the hardshell though because it just doesn't get that cold. I wear insulated coveralls for hunting but just normal clothes otherwise. I wear shorts 9 months out of the year.

Interesting thread. I've actually been moving away from all the high-tech clothing that's out there and moving into traditional fabrics... including those heavy wearing canvas cotton Carhartts - their pants specifically to play around outside in.

:)

I'm in MD, usually winter can be bad but some warmer weather breaks up the cold snaps and snowstorms. This past winter was mild.

I have a couple Carhartt watch caps, a Columbia mad hatter hat, some REI brand gloves and balaclava. No snow boots, but I've got a great pair of Merrell boots that are quite warm. I have two Columbia parkas, one Carhartt parka, just got a light Carhartt coat, and hope to get a Carhartt hood less traditional coat as my non beater. I found a plaid walmart brand coat and beat the hell out of it today working in my fathers field.

High tomorrow is only 36 in Baltimore, I'm an hour north. Need to get some long johns. Diabetes socks are very warm in those Merrell boots.
