Winter is coming, What are you wearing.

None of the Brooks Brothers I have itch. At least not for me. I hope washing it will solve your problem. If it was truly new without tags, then it shouldn't have shrunk. If it fits as it is, I'd be hesitant about putting it in the dryer.
I do have a couple of light merino wool sweaters that do seem to itch a bit when I first put them on. Then it goes away within a few minutes.

Well I managed to find a 100% merino wool shirt/light sweater at the Good Will in Portland today. My wife took the GRE yesterday so we decided to spend the night to take advantage of the shopping and fancy restaurants of the big city. Anyway, I'm wearing the thing now, it's actually pretty itchy. Out of the dozen or so 100% merino wool shirts that I could find this was the only one that fit the way I wanted, I paid $12 for it. I may just have to wash it to solve the itch problem, it appears to be new without tags. It's a calvin klein, I don't know if it's shrunk or what, but it's a XL and I'm wearing it underneath my size Medium Carhartt shirt.

Not all merino is created equal. Certainly not all of it is good enough to wear next to skin. Merino is a strain of sheep (the most common one if memory serves) so all the merino label tells you is that. There are both wool and meat strains out there. It is the garments specifically made to be worn next to skin from top quality merino that you want there. If it itches do not wear it as a base layer. One fairly inexpensive performance merino brand is red ram which is the chinese offshoot of ice breaker.

Yeah. I've been looking at red ram. I'm just hesitant to try it because of the price, maybe I ought to just bite the bullet. The Calvin Klein sweater I just bought was labeled "Extra Fine Merino" whatever that means.

It's -15F here at the moment. To take the dogs for a walk this evening, I'm wearing a merino t-shirt, a midweight fleece pullover, an 800-fill down jacket, fleece-lined shell pants, Sorels, a wool hat and fleece gloves.

I own 3 of those redram short sleeve t-shirts. They've worked well for me but the cost was fairly high even on sale. I payed about 20-25 USD each on amazon. I think I got my moneys worth since that is about what you would pay for some designer t-shirts and there is no contest which I'd rather wear as a winter base layer when outside all day.

I wear them when I know I will be out in the cold for a long time. Yesterday I spent 15 hours in one.

Under Armour charged cotton shirts are excellent for Layering. I am fixing to get some long sleeved ones. I love my short sleeved ones!

I'm fat & hot natured, So I'm usually wearing the same thing in winter that I do in summer. Truspec 24-7 pants, a scrub top with a sleeveless tee shirt underneath so my chest hair don't fall in the face of the patient I'm lookin' after, and low top trail hikers for the terrazzo floor. In winter I'll add a toboggan for when my listeners get cold.

I have choice of :

Schott 740N 32 oz Melton Wool Naval Pea Coat
M-65 Field Jacket with liner.

I have thing for parka jackets, so I got myself Carhartt Anchorage Parka and I quite like it! Puffy, heavy and the hood is really nice with the furry collar. Very warm!

I ordered one of those USMC fleece sweaters. The olive drab light weight version. Mine is a large and it fits a little big, but it works, it's not a fashion item anyway. I think if I pair it with a base layer and my primaloft one jacket (or a Carhartt) I should be comfortable (and flexible) down to zero degrees assuming I also wear all the cold weather accessories like gloves, hat, boots etc. I really like the 1/2 zip for venting and the large pocket in front. I had a hard time finding sizing on line, so like I said, I bought a large. I wear a medium in Carhartt and a large in Columbia and Under Armor and I wear a 16.5x36 shirt my chest measures 44-45". Hopefully my info might help somebody here to order the correct size. The arms are a little too short for my tastes, but I have really long arms. A Medium tall/long might fit me better.

Well the cold snap is over here and were back up to normal temps again, the snow has all but disappeared. Today it'll probably get up to into the 40's. It's that terrible wet muddy time of year when it freezes at night and rains during the day.

When I'm at work delivering the mail--shorts, Under Armor LS shirt under my SS postal shirt and Merrells. Once it hits 20 degrees the long pants come out. The Under Armor Cold Gear 3.0 is great for me since I am walking all day. At home I have a fleece lined Patagonia jacket and Cabela's cargo shorts!!

Means the sheep came from very good and refined families. ;)

I might as well ask here....I need a good base layer, I'm not going to cheap out on it either. Any suggestions? Long sleeved, light weight, etc.? It's not freezing cold here 24/7, but it gets pretty durned chilly early in the am before the sun pops out, especially when working both inside and outside randomly.

Under Armour?
