I've long admired the knives that Burt and David make - they each have a recognizable style and a great sense of proportion and aesthetics...so much so that I am pleased to own several from each of them!:D

I also thought that a collaboration between the 2 of them would be amazing, and seeing as how my "number" has come up, I thought that a laminated subhilt would be out of this world. We emailed back a forth and came up with a plan...... and here are some WIP pictures so far.

The first is a design sketch, followed by Burt's rough forged, laminated blade, then a slightly cleaned up, quick etch shot. The blade is 416 and 52100 I think - Burt can correct me if I'm wrong:)

Next is the Damascus billet for the guard/hilts, re-stacked , and then the final big chunk

Everything is going off to David For carving, final grinding etc, then back to Burt for HT, Sheath etc etc

As the guys send me more pictures, I'll try to post them ( in a timely fashion!!)

Bill

I am so looking forward to the evolution of this thread and the creation of this knife.
Thanks so much!

I should add, the handle will probably be curly Koa....because I have some spectacular pieces , and because I have a "stable" of Koa knives already

helps to have friends in Hawaii ;)

Not that this is news to anyone, but both Burt and David are great to work with, and keep in touch on a regular basis - I really can't say enough about those guys

What a terrific concept, combining the talents of these two exceptional makers. I will be glued to this thread to see this knife take shape. Hats off to you for coming up with this.

This definitely should be an exceptional knife. David Broadwell makes amongst the best subhilts in my opinion, and Burt Foster makes some great looking knives with incredible hamons.

Update - the blade went from Burt to David - preliminary carving done, back to Burt for HT. I am waiting for a few more fotos, then I will post them.

Thanks

Bill
