WIP Damascus Eastside

standard.jpg

My stencil is taped on and ready to go. I only tape one side so that I can raise the stencil to check the progress.
Craig, I'm just a bit curious about why you stenciled your maker's mark on your damascus steel blades while I noticed that you engraved your maker's mark on your plain steel blades, any reason? :o

Craig, thanks for taking the extra time to take and share these photos with us.
The damascus pattern turned out real well.

Revisit this WIP thread :) Any new pictures, Craig? Hoping to see the making of the fittings and the fixing of the handle ;)

Hi Everyone, I do hae some more pics. In fact I will be doing the final etch on the fittings and final assembly Wednesday. I might get to them tomorrow but we have a meeting after work tomorrow so I don't know what time I will be getting home. The pics will probably be available wednesday also. I just moved my computer from downstairs to upstairs in the house and don't have the printer/scanner/picture downloader hooked back up yet.

They are ready:) .

This first pic shows the raw materials for the handle.

This is an action shot of the the surface grinder grinding the scale off the damascus for the guard.

standard.jpg

I use a drill bit slightly smaller than thickness of the tang to layout my holes for the guard.

standard.jpg

Here the holes have been spotted and marked so the drill bit doesn't walk.

I use and oversize mill cutter to make a relief pocket on the back side of the guard.

standard.jpg

Here is a close up of the pocket. The depth is a little less than half the thickness of the guard.

standard.jpg

Once the pocket is finished I flip the guard over and connect the holes for the guard slot.

The guard is fitted to the blade and rough shaped.

The guard is shaped and sanded to be ready for etching. The spacer is fitted and filed and also ready for etching. From this point on I got lost in working on the handle and forgot to take pics.

That knife is total hotness. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Awesome post and a beautiful knife to complete the project. Thanks for sharing the process.

Very nice, Craig.:thumbup:A question for you. Why do you mill the large pocket on the backside of the guard?

Looking good, thanks for the WIP and that is a great knife. Have a great Easter my friend!:D:thumbup:
