Thanks everyone. The pocket allows the Jb weld to flow from the handle to the guard, creating one bond throughout all of the pieces. Once it is on the knife it is about 1/16 of an inch on each side of the tang.

I hadn't checked this thread since the pics of the damascus pattern after etching.

Came out GREAT.
