hey everybody

got out into the shop for the first time in several weeks and really the first time in over a month. i had a hard time deciding what do with this blade. it started out as a machete, then became a tanto blade (hence the habaki) then i thought it wasn't quite a tanto blade... so i decided to go more of a filipino style with it.
here is what i came up with.

i have never done carving like this before, so if you have some pointers they would be greatly appreciated! if you have any critiques, i haven't finished it yet.. so please let me know what you think!

the blade is 1095 micarta "tsuba" and the wood is cherry.

The only advice I have is to keep a good photo log, and post as many pictures of the process as possible. I cant wait to see how it finishes up.

thanks guys!
got the handle halves cut chiseled and glued on saturday, as well as finishing up some waxes, and getting the blade for a pocket knife heat treated. (i felt very accomplished with that after two months inactivity)

i have pictures, and will post them as i go. i am looking forward to the carving, and looking forward to seeing it done as much as yall. the hamon came our really nice (partially why it is a fancy knife and not a machete) so i am excited.

i hope to sell it to get some extra cash for christmas presents.
thanks again!

Great idea. I really want to see how you continue with this. I keep trying to get up the
nerve to try some similar carving myself.

hey guys!
i am working on the handle, and have some pictures:

next step is to do the sheath, then polish the blade, then do the final carving. or that is what i am going to try anyway.
thanks for looking, i would appreciate any help you can give me.
thanks

the sheath is gluing, i use a real strong but really slow epoxy, so it wont be ready fo a bit.
next step is to finish teh blade and components, attach the handle, then shape the sheath before starting the carving.
thanks for looking!

hey guys!
had a bunch of school to do, so didnt get very much done, however, the handle is all glued up so i can finish it, and the sheath is rough shaped.

i took a picture to try and show the "tiger" stripe in the cherry. i also put in the copper transition, to tie in the copper habaki.

gonna pencil in the carvings on the sheath and then on the handle after shaping.

Chris, that knife looks fantastic! however... that guy you have modeling isn't as appealing! you should take the path of JT and have your girl do the modeling! =)

Amazing work as always, Chris. You inspire me to get out to the shop and finish the orders I've been procrastinating on (Christmas deadlines). I'm tempted to stop taking orders and just make some new stuff for fun and learning!

Tremendous job. Looking forward to seeing how this one finishes out.

hey!
one thing is.. once you get into hamons, there is no going back!

but seriously, just begin simple, and you will have alot less frustration. also, check out Walter Sorrell's website and hamon DVD. also his polishing one. they were invaluble.

and have fun!
lookingforward to some sweet blades
peace
