WIP, Machined knife

Way to show off Dudley! These are super cool, and I love the WIP's. I still need to get one at some point.

I still need to get one at some point.

Well, just FYI, tomorrow will be my first general sale this year here on BF. I don't get a chance to post work here as often as I'd like, so it has been a little while. I'll post a few 6" and some 8". Perhaps you'd like to poke your head in and take a look.

Congratulations on a project well executed, I work and sell CNC machines and what you have done and shown show great skills and CNC smarts.

Like I said a page or two back, the one shown first finished from the start is mine.

Paul Long made a nice black cowhide sheath for it.

Told Nathan that I would review it on BFC, so will share my initial impressions.

1. This is more utility fighter than fighter. It's very light...it weighs 7.3 oz, and the POB is right at the first screw. My preferences for blade weight, length and POB have been informed by my own experiences and then sharing data with Joe Paranee, Sifu Kelly Worden, my Sensei and other blade "aware" people.
2. I like a little more weight forward for snap cuts....this knife CAN snap cut, but it requires a lot more "touch" with the pinky and ring finger than a "pure" fighter.
3. The fit and finish are without peer....it is just about perfect.
4. Like most knifemakers and ALL machinists that I have known, the spine and "guard" are at a perfect, slightly "broken" ninety degree angle. It's too sharp at these areas, leading to hot spots and fatigue on the part of the user.....little more broken edges would be beneficial.
5. The design is without fault AS a Utility-Fighter....the ergonomics once the above issue is addressed are superlative and it is SHARP....hair popping, convex edged "wound is there before they know it" kind of sharp....10 of 10 sharp.
6. I'm not selling this ever....for the type of knife that I consider it....would use it in a heartbeat....glad that I don't have to and it can remain the sweet little treasure that it is....Elmax is an impressive steel.
7. I will be watching Nathan Carothers very carefully for future offerings and you should as well. The value is tremendous and what he is doing is competent, creative and completely worth owning and useable, as opposed to many "flavor of the month" knifemakers that have inflated priced offerings and are a pain in the ass to deal with.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Nice review, thank you STeven. I appreciate your perspective - additional points for me to consider and learn about. I have one on the way and I'm sure I will just as enamored of mine as you are of yours. Mike

My knife just arrived from Nathan, and it is as close to perfect as I can tell. The ergo's are very nice, and the edge is just stupid sharp. I love it, and would highly recommend getting one if you can. These are an incredible value. Now I just need one with OD green scales!
Here are few pics I snapped. I am not Coop, but I think they came out nice.

I received one yesterday one of the 6" 3V and I have to say it is a very comfortable knife. I mean noticeably comfortable. Thanks Nathan.

^^^ Those are super images, Ben! Nicely dramatic.

I'm so thankful how this knife, so very removed from the wonderful forged pieces on this forum, has also captured wide acclaim.

Room for EVERYTHING!

Hello!

I love how this is slowly turning into a "forum knife" of sorts... :D ;)

Great catch everyone!

Best regards,
Alex

that is a slick model! i really like the fuller/bohi...what is the blade length on that machine? is it blackwood?

nice work, nathan!

Finally received one of these 6" fighters today (thanks, USPS). Mine has a double-edge dagger grind and carbon fiber scales machined into a diamond quilt pattern.

STeven is not kidding about sharp. Scary sharp. Maybe the sharpest knife I have ever held. And that goes for both edges. I am reminded of a line from the movie "Kill Bill: Vol. 1": "If, on your journey, should you encounter God, God will be cut."

Although it is a fighter, if I had to defend myself I think I would prefer the 8" pig sticker. More reach and more mass. But simply "as a knife" I like this one better.

Elmax was an excellent choice, IMO. Tested at 60HRC. Performance . . . just take a look at Nathan's videos to get an idea of the abuse his knives will withstand and still shave hair.

This is a knife that is begging to be used, but it is just so damn fine that it is going to be hard to do.

Overall, IMO this was one screaming bargain. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, and when he does there is an excellent chance that I will be getting right back in line trying to score my third one of his knives.

Thanks, Nathan, for this thread and for the knife.

It is the 8" blade model, and the handle is black G10. I am still loving to. I have carried it a bit inverted on my weak side. It is completely hidden under a T-shirt, and I am a skinny dude.
