Wire clips, good or bad?

I was just wishing the other day that more Spydies had them. They're easy to increase/decrease the clip tension, don't snag and scratch as much, very smooth clipping and unclipping and don't show damage as much as the normal black coated clips.

Wire clips rock, I find them at least as strong as the full metal clips. They are almost invisible when carrying in pocket carry and snag less.

cheers,

I have wire clips on my 3 Spyderco DODO knives. I have had no trouble with them at all. I do agree with Scott however that I don't think they would be good for the bigger models i.e. Manix, Military, Lil Temperance, Dyad ect.

I prefer wire clips. Standard clips are starting to seem like cheap stamped pieces of metal to me. Plus the reasons that dwatts67 and others have mentioned.

I love the wire clip. Too bad that none of my favorite Spyderco designs have them. :grumpy:

As usual - I'm with Buzz (How do you spell sickofant? :D)

I prefer the wire clips. The Dodo's clip is very unobtrusive, even though it's not as deep as the Meerkat's wire clip. I've also found they tend to gouge stuff less when I accidentally brush against painted/finished surfaces. ;)

I don't love them or hate them. It is not one of the factors I look at when purchasing a knife. It is just as good to me as any other clip in my opinion.

Wire clips are by far my fav. Here's why:

They're low profile--people don't even associate the wire clip with a knife at all.

They don't scratch up like crazy like all my other clips (with the notable exception of my para)

They're better for manipulation...they're not smooth, and are thus grippable in the space inbetween...not too big a deal for for your ordinary folders, but it made a BIG difference between my spyderfly and my 41MC (the clip on benchmade balis is smooth and flat).

And lastly, I just like how they look.

It's no surprise that I've bought 3 wire clip spydercos.

IMO, they work better, but they are not as pretty as a polished, bug-engraved stamped clip.

I know the first impression is that they might seem "cheap" but the irony is that they are more expensive to produce than stamped clips.

I thought I heard that fact discussed before. Any idea why they're more expensive to make?

In any case, I'm fine with them. Lately, I've been carrying a Dodo and the wire clip definitely attracts less attention for some reason.

They are really cool looking, but experience make me believe they snag too much to things...

I love the wire clips.

I have a Dodo, two Native IIIs, and two D'Allaras. :) The wire clips weren't what sold me on the knives, but for some reason those were the first 5 spyderco knives i bought.

Wire clips work well when you want to hind the clip eg UKPK

Metal clips are better for large knives and when you what to look manly :D !

Wire clips for me.:D I really like the UKPK clip, it's descrete, looks good & seems plenty strong, but my favorite feature is that is doesn't gouge things I walk past. It is definately my favorite clip.

wire clips are okay, just not for me. primary reason beign, hand cannot draw fast without gripping the knife tightly between my fingers. gripping wire too tightly, causes pinching of the fabric of pocket with finger and causing drag, but too loose and the knife gets fumbled

for that reason i gave away a beautiful blue native III as a gift, :( but, i made sure it wasn't just anyone! ;)

I simply can't believe that wire clips are actually more expensive to make than a stamped or cut metal clip. How is a wire more expensive than a soild piece of metal that has to be stamped, bent and finished? All you have to do to the wire clip is bend it and coat it. The wire probably comes coated and bending wire is not a major undertaking.

Not all wire is created equal.

Hi Kgriggs,

Wire clips do in fact cost more to make than stamped clips.

We can stamp 3 or 4 clips a second. Bending is done at the same rate. Tumbling to deburr. Coating the clip adds cost which makes it more expensive depending on the coating.

The wire we use is special wire, (read expensive) Bending is critical and is done by a CNC. Takes 4 or 5 seconds to bend. Then the wire is heat treated which gives it the dark color.

Some of our customers like stamped clips, some like wire clips. That's why we make both.
