With these wants – What’s My Knife?

The Spyderco catalog states the blade as CTS XHP...is this the same thing as S30v?

Thanks for the input and help.

They switched from s30v to XHP a couple of years ago. Not the same, but I doubt most people would see any difference in use.

I don't see how a Delica could be considered too big but that might just be me. A dragon fly seems about perfect.

No, but the performance will be very, very similar. S30V might hold an edge a bit longer, XHP might be slightly less prone to chipping, but I sincerely doubt I could tell the difference in a blind test. Both are great all around steels.

As for cost, a very large, famous online retailer has them in your price range. We here, however, always suggest you spend a couple more bucks and go through a BF dealer like BladeHQ, Knifecenter or Knifeworks.

A couple more i didnt see listed yet;

H&K mini axis

3.62"
2.88 oz.
Axis lock
D2 Steel
No deep pocket clip, but I'm sure someone can tell if one of the other Benchmade clips fit.

One that really is a nice looking knife I think,
Lionsteel mini cocobolo w/ titanium bolster:
Not deep carry, but d2 Steel,
3.3" closed
2oz.
Liner lock, but not "buried" in the scales, a nice little cutout makes it easily accessible. A very handsome gentlemanly knife.

Same said for the Spyderco Cat linerlock +with a deep carry clip. And the Spyderco Chicago is the Cat but even smaller yet.

a Mcusta small nami framelock is a tad over your budget. But another handsome gentleman folder (framelock) that isnt a true deep carry, but close, and checks every other box, except maybe handle;
3.625" closed, but 0.025" isn't a deal breaker I would think.

Benchmade Small Summit is another handsome deep carry lockback knife that is just a bit over budget, 3.65" closed, and 3.04 oz.... Very close to hitting every spec. But, nail nick for two handed opening, however you can add a $5 Kwik stud, (silver or brass), place the studbwhere you want it to best suit your grip and thumb placement, and presto, you have yourself a great looking diamondwood, one handed opening, deep carry clip, lockback knife in s30v Steel, that is only 0.05" over length, and 0.04 oz. over weight!
Should run ya about $125 in all.
That's a great option I think to really nail everything you want, except the handle, but the wood looks way better then any G10 or FRN handle IMO...

Indeed. Just picked up another one off the Exchange here. Tough as nails, carries effortlessly.

I'd suggest the Boker Urban Trapper... length is a touch over what you listed, but I wouldn't worry over it. It weighs under two ounces, has a super deep carry clip, Titanium frame lock with bearing pivot and VG-10 steel... and a price that's right in your wheelhouse.

You don't like it, message me and I'll buy it off you.

This actually strikes me as a very cool suggestion. I stand by the Chaparral, but this strikes me as very worth considering.

The Chaparral was my work EDC for ~2.5yrs. I carried it pretty much exactly as described in the OP. I also really like the UKPK and Native LW, but the handle lengths are longer on those.

Is the Chaparral still your EDC?

So many outstanding options out there...being orange is my favorite color really love the looks of the orange Dragonfly. Tough call but right now I think I'm leaning towards the Spyderco Chaparral. Although the Mini Griptilian Sheepsfoot in black is a stunner as well...too bad it's definitely larger than I want to go right now.

I appreciate everyone's input...it has been a tremendous help so far!

Contego 810 deep carry clip works on my Mini Axis. Send Benchmade an email and within 2 weeks they'll send you a deep carry clip and screws for free. I STILL haven't sharpened my Mini Axis, and it plows through wood, plastic, and cardboard almost everyday. I've had it for about 3 months now. For $90, I think it's your best option.

Knifeworks has an orange scaled mini ritter grip:

And gpknives has an orange sheepsfoot mini Grip with thumb hole, but a bit more then you want to spend:

Just saying...

Kershaw's coming out with a new itty bitty auto that's quite nifty looking. I'd also suggest a Kershaw leek. It's 4" closed, but isn't particularly deep carry, so it should still fit just fine. Nice little knife and if you get orange or teal it doesn't scare old ladies.

Either that or a fake. Says HAP40/SUS110 on the blade.

It's real. They were a sprint run late last year. I think they're mostly sold out now. It's a composite steel using HAP40 and SUS110. I have one I haven't had a chance to use mine much yet but some people have gotten really cool patinas on them. It's also burnt orange FRN, a little darker than standard Spydie orange.

If you dig the orange Dragonfly, I believe the Hap40 burnt orange sprint is due to hit very soon.

Damn, Wurrwulf... that is the cat's meow right there. I'm so doing this with mine.

Kind of like what everyone has said, a Delica or Mini Grip will be your best option IMO. (although it seems they don't perfectly fit your parameters)

As was highly recommended over on the Spyderco forum the Chaparral and Dragonfly fit the bill very nicely. Since you were asking in a Spyderco specific forum I didn't bother to suggest other knives but glad a few have already mentioned the HK Mini Axis made by Benchmade. I bought one of these recently from exchange and it really is a nice little knife. Very smooth and solid feeling. My only complaint is that it's a little short even with medium sized hands. It feels as though it needs a finger choil so you can choke up on it. This is where the Dragonfly and Chaparral really excel.
