WNY Gathering 2012

OK, got the 20" lid for it today. The lid handle screw promptly stripped out ! After 2 trips to the hardware store we are in business ! :D

Awesome, I might come out for the day. Id love to meet you guys. Do we bring a dish to pass and all our knives?

At least your knives lol, and maybe some money Toooj from Ka Bar will be back this year and brings us goodies to buy. A dish to pass may not hurt either. Doug.

JUST 3 weeks and it all kicks off. I am buying a bunch or hot dogs, a bunch of burger, a bunch of BACON. I will have at least 3 cases of water and I am sure I will be grabbing some BEER too. My wife is doing pulled pork for Saturday nights dinner. She may be making home made cole slaw as well and salt potatoes, and if luck is with us fresh sweet corn At least we should eat good. Doug

I made up some fire starter stuff as a gift for those that show up (if they want it). Made up little bundles of 100% Jute twine, 10 pieces about 8" long, soaked in hot parafin wax, folded in half & rubber banded. Also making up some cotton balls soaked in liquid petrolium jelly. Thought that would be nice, for those that want it.

EDIT: And they really work too !

This is my first fire made with just a ferro rod, a little magnesium, jute twine & cotton ball soaked in pet jelly.

Those should go over big. I have some fat wood the DBoles brought me too. Doug

I've got lots of gear that hasn't yet seen the light of day this year. :( Going to have to set up a saw/chop/split station. That way everyone can try out some cool gear and process some firewood at the same time.

I'm looking forward to this year. I just received a book entitled "Traditional Indian Recipes," copyright 1971. Not very p.c., I know. ;) We'll have to try out some of these recipes.

I'm chomping at the bit to get my hands on some new steel, as well.

I have 4 med sized level pieces of a tree for chopping on too. I thought i would set up something with them (like chopping stations) for responsible un-intoxicated people to use my blades, choppers, hawks, axe & hatchet on. I need some help with my hawks, hope someone there can help. I am fairly new to them. They are definately NOT where i want them to be. I am soooo looking forward to this. Back to making up the gift packs now. Damn those cotton balls soak up a LOT of p-jelly. I only got 40 out of a large jar of p-jelly. The lady at w-mart looked at me funny when i had 3 large jars of it ! LOL I wanted to say something funny, but i was in uniform so i didn't. LOL

It looks like I will have to make sure to have an edge on my chopper for people to try out. Doug

Just 2 weeks from today it all kicks off. It looks like fresh sweet corn will be added to Saturday night dinner. I have started my work on the shop projects so it is coming together quickly. See you there. Doug

Just added 10 strike anywhere matches dipped in parafin wax, to each "Welcome & thanks for stopping by" kit.

:o Note to self : DO NOT mess with liquid wax or petroleum jelly when not wearing a shirt !!!! OMG did that hurt ! :o

I am so looking forward to the WNY Gathering this year. :D

Don't forget to bring all your knives, axes & choppers. Even the ones you don't want, you can put them on a trade blanket & maybe someone else will have something you want. :D

The trade blanket is a great idea, though I've never participated in one and have no idea how it would work.

Thats what I was thinking too Roger. Basically you put something out there and if someone wants that they take it, and if you see something you take it. Just have to make sure you put out something you want to move. what ever is there is up for grabs.

While I've never done a trade blanket, I always pictured it as a situation where both parties walk away satisfied. Items are added to the trade until everyone agrees that it's "a good deal."

Like the pearl trade scene in "Papillon," but nobody gets his throat cut. :D
